How many miles are on the car? Are the plugs junk? how about mileage on the wires? O2 sensors? Did your car act up after filling up with gas? Just a start for you. Are you getting a check engine light at all?

Wade, did you say you have oil in the plug wells? If so, this will cause all of what you are experiencing. I had the same problem and changed the wires and plugs...instantly fixed? Mine felt as if it was running on 4 cylinders, no power, sluggish, etc. Let me know about oil in the plug wells. It might be time for the 02 sensors to be replaced. It's not hard to do. Mike

Wade you have a couple options here. First, the leaking oil means you need new valve cover gaskets and this can get expensive(alot of labor) second, you can take an air gun keeping the PLUG WIRES ON and blow out the oil in all cylinders, then pop the caps and clean the ends VERY GOOD, remove the plugs and clean carefully with a rag (careful about shit falling in your cylinders) then get OEM Ford Replacement plugs for your year SHO-use nothing else!!!(about $65 but worth every penny)replace the plugs and it will smoke a little on start up but will burn the residual oil very quickly and you should have your car back. Remember, this is a "quick" fix to replacing the valve covers. It could last months or weeks depending how bad their leaking. I hope this helps. Is it an ATX ot MTX you have? Mike

Hold on there!

Replacement plugs can be had for under $4 each from multiple sources. AGSP-32PP as I recall, from FordPartsNetwork, are $3.99. That's $24 (not $65) for new ones).

You can check the resistence of the plug wires (if you have a multimeter that measures ohms) and make sure they're okay.

Also, you don't really need the valve cover gaskets, but rather you need the donut-shaped spark plug tube seals that comes with the valve cover gasket set (Fel-Pro brand).

Once you get the oil and gunk out of the plug wells, and you replace the spark plugs, there's a way you can probably minimize the amount of oil that's forced by your plug well seals into the wells. Paul N. (SHOZ123) has determined that by removing the PCV fresh air hose (or whatever it's called) that runs from the front valve cover to the throttle body (and capping the openings) the pressure is greatly reduced, and this should minimize the oil being forced around your plug well seals into the wells.

I would clean out the plug wells, replace the plugs, perform this mod suggested by Paul, and enjoy...at least for awhile!

Good luck.

Mike, how do you blow the oil out of the wells with the wires on? shrug

The list price on the Motorcraft is high, but some places will sell you them for about $70ish a piece. (It will take two) You can also get Bosch and other brands at AZ, PEPBOYS,etc. They are a pain to change, unless you have an O2 sensor wrench kit. OR, you can un bolt the motor mounts, pipes and so on. AZ will "loan you a set(3 different sockets) for $15. At least that's the charge her in GA. No extra charge if you keep um. (I kept mine) O2 sensors are not going away if you leave it to the EPA. AZ has some neat tools to loan if you need them. Hope this helps.

Did you hear me? It's not your valve cover gaskets. It's your plug well seals that let oil by.

You sound like you insist on having a "professional" do this, although I'd personally feel safer hiring a SHOwner who'd done it before help you out. It's really not difficult, just a bit time consuming. Also, while you have the intake off and other stuff removed, you can do quite a bit of other maintenance. You won't get this for your $350-500 at a shop.

AutoZone sells the Bosch oxygen sensors that work great for around $50/each now. They are typically replaced in pairs, and yours are an absolute piece of cake to replace (ffalan is referring to his ATX, in which one connector is more difficult to reach).

I'm not trying to harp here, but unless you have oodles of money spilling out your ***** you could save a bundle by doing some of this yourself.

Where the heck is "Moline" anyway? A search brings up quite a few cities named Moline. Surely someone nearby will help you out. Many people here are more than willing to teach another SHOwner how to fix little maintenance items.

I already mentioned the plugs are $4/each. The wires can be had for around $80/set. You can get the Fel-Pro gasket set (which includes the plug well seals) for around $70 at AutoZone.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Well, first things first...
Plugs; Use ONLY the Motorcraft P/N: AGSP32PP(Double Platinum) plug. I went to my local Ford dealer, and they wanted $10 per oh_my Go online and order them from Fordpartsnetwork.com for $3.99. At the same site you will find the plug wires P/N: WR-4033 The 3.0L wires will fit the 3.2, and cost$44.00 less if you go with the OEM. The Taylors P/N: 74268 will cost approx $75, and you can get those from Summit Racing or www.carshopinc.com. As for the gaskets, the set you want is from Autozone.com order P/N: VS50378R. This will have the 2 cover gaskets, and the 6 donut seals for the plug wells.
Second...Other than being time intensive, you can do all of this yourself, and save ALOT of $$$. E-mail SDPatt and request his procedure for the removal of the Intake Manifold...Good luck! thumbs_u
