If you pick up a decent headunit, might as well chuck the factory 4-channel amp. ****, toss both of them and get yourself a nice aftermarket sub/amp combo.

With my Pioneer headunit and infinity speakers, it gets plenty loud. It's also nice and clear too. I set my headunit's crossover to keep the low notes out of the speakers.

I have an 8inch polk in the rear deck and a 230watt JBL amp to handle the bass. I don't listen to rap so I don't really need a big amp/sub package to rattle any windows in the neighborhood.

or instead of replacing the headunit (i for one like the stock clean look) you can upgrade just th amps and speakers in the car. + your volume controll on the dash will still work.

the stock head unit is just good for outputs then the amps boost that to the desired level. goign this route still screws you with the stock broken CD player mod though.

Both the stock units in my 95 and my fathers 93 bit the dust, they would just make popping noises whenever you tried to adjust volume/treb/bass. It's a shame too, I liked the auxilary buttons on the dash. But I enjoy my MP3 cd player too much so that outweighs the lack of dash buttons.

I'm all for factory the factory look, but the ease of exapansion that an aftermarket unit provides and the sound quality almost makes putting one in a requirement.

gen 2: 6.5" 4ohm subwoofer in 0.42cf enclosure, 85w sub amp. 4x15w amp for the other speakers.

Never really realized how low output the amps were, but at the sametime, the stock system with an aftermarket HU sounds great.

If you get a high end head unit (Kenwood, Eclipse, Pioneer) they should have a wire that connects your dash controls to that head unit so you can still use them.

When I first got my 89 I replaced the head unit and kept the amps. It sounded pretty good. Then the amp fried so I pulled it and put in a bypass cable and it sounded even better, and was louder!

The stock systems were great for their day, but their day has gone. Any decent name brand $100 stereo will be cleaner and louder then the old amps.

Thanks for the info on the sub enclosure. I might try to use it for the ID IDQ10 I'm installing... I haven't dropped the enclosure yet but we'll see in a couple weeks...
