I usually don't use the EATC much but today got kinda cold so I turn on the heat, the water temp gauge went down to blue, but when I turn the EATC off it would hover between "o" and "r" on Normal during stop and go traffic.

I hope it's not the blend door because I really don't feel like taking off the dash... :frown:

would it move the gauge instantly?

the heat will cool the engine down, but it shouldent a whole bunch, maby a thermostat problem.

the blend door mixes heated air with fresh air (cool) to get the desired temprature.

I really don't know what the blend door is.

But when I turn the heat on or off it would take about 5 minutes for the gauge to move to blue or back up to where it's supposed to be.

That isnt the blend door. The blend door controls the hot and cold air that flows into the ac system.

If the car was being hotter then normal then it could be the thermostat, but if it went away then it should be okay.

There is always hot(should be hot) coolant flowing thru the heater core. It is not turned off, or restricted, or regulated. Ac, heat, defrost, vent,,whatever, there is always full coolant flow thru the heater core. The blend door moves and "blends" the hot AIR going thru the heater core with fresh AIR coming in from the cowl to give you the desired temp of cabin air. Since the air does remove some of the heat from the coolant it can lower the coolant temp a bit. (Thats why if your car is overheating the first thing you should do is turn the heater on full blast) Are you getting plenty of heat in the cabin? Is the engine hot enough to burn your hand if you grab the upper radiator hose? You may just have a touchy temp sender. Try checking for corrosion on the sender where the wire attaches to it.

When you turn on the ETAC so will the cooling fan for the radiator. With the ETAC turned off the cooling fan will only turn on when needed. This may be the reason why the coolant temp drops down.

Keep in mind when on Floor or Vent the cooling fan will not run.

Something is a lil fishy if just turning on your heat will drop your temp that much. Perhaps a bad stat? When was the last time a coolant flush and such was done?

The good news is your dash is remaining in tact. As stated above, blend door is there for your interior comfort, there is no inline control for the coolant to enter the heater core. Your problem is something else, would need more info, just keep an eye on it and best of luck.

Thanks for the input guys, now my car is running at or right below "L" when on the highway with the EATC turned off as well, so it sounds like the thermostat is stuck open. I'll get a new one tomorrow and see what happens.

Hey Kris,

I don't mean to further complicate your issue, but my temperature gauge runs right over the "L" in "NORMAL" when driving on the highway, and I'm quite certain my cooling system is operating normally.

Oh... Maybe it's the colder weather then, the lowest mine used to go is about the "A" on the highway, not it's at or below the "L". Maybe it is nothing (but the the EATC issue when turned on), but I got a thermostat and a gasket for about $20 Canadian, mind as well change it :)
