I am getting ready to do the "drain plug" mod on my MTX. I picked up this 1/8 brass plug today at Lowes, they were about as helpful as a heart attack.

Do I have the right plug? Between the SHO times write up and what I have found here in searching, both said the 1/8-27 NPT brass plug.

This says 1/8 MIP. I matched it up to a 1/8-27 NPT tap, the thread pitch looked the same. I am trying to be careful and take my time, making sure I have all the right stuff for the job BEFORE I start it. Would a 5/16 drill bit work for this, then just tap the rest of the hole out? I am not finding a 21/64 drill bit, seems to be a pretty odd size. I matched the plug up to a thing at Lowes that tells you what size hole to use, that is how I came to 5/16.

Yup, that's it - there is only one thread pitch per size for pipe threads, the MIP stands for male ? pipe, iirc. As long as you have a tap with the same thread pitch, you're good to go.

x2 from tapping a lot of shit (get your head out of the gutter) Make sure you are as much at a 90deg to the housing as possible, also hint, put your drill bit on a magnet over night, and same with the tap, will help keep small metal shavings out of there.

Side note, they do make plugs with a magnet on the end, wouldn't hurt.

Umm... are you serious?

The housing is aluminum...

go one size smaller on the bit.. 5/16" should work just fine. The aluminum is soft enough, that tap will run right thru it like butter. And don't be underneath it ... keep ur hand to the side, or it runs down your arm into your shirt.. ;)

Coat (pack!) the drill bit and tap (in the flutes) with wheel bearing grease. This will collect most of the bits of material.

x2 - they don't make an AL magnet... yet! ;)

Out in front!
Shavings no problem the sudden stream of fluid will rinse them down your arm . Have complete control of your drill. Also drill through the bottom of a cup it'll help keep tranny fluid off your drill.
