I've been thinking (look out!).... I paid around 1200 bucks for my 89 SHO, got a decent deal...the only fix ups I've done are new CV-Joint, new exhaust pipes (cats to Y), and a K&N air filter. I've been thinking about replacing my water pump, plugs/wires, Crank sensor, valve gaskets/spark plug seals, timing and acc. belts. I figure its about 500 bucks for the parts from Mid West SHO...I'm thinking of doing it mostly my self...I dunno if its worth it. I love the car, I had a 93 ATX before an unfortunate incident (blowing a stop sign @ 100 mph+ and getting rear ended) bad thing that was...Should I save up and get another newer model SHO, or stick w/ the old 89 I have. I like the 89 because of the power and the stick, but I liked the 93 cause it was more luxurious and sleek. Hmmmmm.... Show....or go.....

Do whatever is best for you.

If the car is otherwise in good condition and running well, it seems that spending $500 on routine maintenance, even for a car you only paid $1200 for, could be well worth it. If you predict the car is going to be a bottomless money pit even after the maintenance, then perhaps you should consider a newer car which requires less maintenance.

Hmmmm..... well, the car is in good shape, could use a paint job, seats/shifter are ripped. I put some seat covers over the seats, gonna get a new shift **** from SP motor sports one of these days... needs struts as well but other than that, its good. Engine is very strong, no funky noises. I've only ever owned Taurus, 2 shos and a GL (good luck) I will probably stick with them, until I can afford something better. I would like to get my hands on a cheap Contour SVT, but they are not cheap yet. Thanks for the insight!

Why don't you get the best of both worlds and get a '93-95 with a stick? The '89 and '93-95 have the same drive train just the bodies look different.

If you don't really like the look of the '89 go get a 93-95.

I wouldn't throw a bunch of money at a car that I didn't really like.

If you got the 89 already, might as well fix 'er up. And about the bottomless money pit, that doesn't pertain to just old SHO's. All SHO's are bottomless money pits. So you're not really going to escape the maintenance, because sooner or later, the 2nd GEN will need all the parts you just mentioned too. The SHO is a very high maintenance car, and as somebody once said, if you're not a mechanic or you don't do most of the work yourself, you'll go bankrupt owning this car. wink Good luck to ya though...
