My 94 atx has hit a snag. Outside temp is 95. Car runs without overheating. The atx ran fine until I turned a corner and hit the gas normally. There was nothing there. I stopped, and hit the gas gingerly, nothing in drive. I shifted to reverse. It backed up. Shifted to drive nothing. Shifted to "2" and it drove off like normal. Came to a stop, nothing again in "2". Reversed like normal. Shifted to drive, nothing. Went to "2", drove off like normal. Into the garage at home, no gear worked, but the tranny acknowledged that it was engaging reverse and drive; those shifts sounded normal. When I hit the gas the car would lurch forward and back but it just wasn't grabbing. No grinding or abnormal noise at all. Fluid was normal, smell, color, level.

It is a really warm day. There was a thread earlier on a sensor that could misfunction under hot temps causing the tranny to act "confused". Am I SOL?

Thanks forum.

Ive had both the TSS and VSS fail and unfortunately for you they present completely different symptoms. They will give you hard shifts at the 1-2 shift point or the transmission will act "confused" by not falling into the correct gear for the speed youre traveling... like when going up a steep and it should downshift it will stay in O/D or juggle randomly between gears. There were no issues coming from a stop except sometimes it would stay in first gear when stopped and cause the rpms to drop and the engine to stall. They will also throw individual codes and a CE light when they fail.
Sorry but other then that I dont know that much about the internals of our transmission. Theres a couple of others on the forum who may be able to chime in with an idea of what went kaputt inyour tranny

The tranny guy I talked to in town told me that a piston in the valve body may have failed, or that a spring relaxed causing the mechanism to fail to catch properly, or a possible sensor failure. He'll do the diagnostic sensor check first and then rebuild it with a year or 12k warranty. He quoted me $1,700 and change. Its about what I expected. The shop comes well regarded and its a local fellow with a name to uphold. I am leary though because these specialty shops generally are renouned for ripping people off in my past experience. I very well can't sit and watch him rebuild it. Ideally, I would love to be able to do that.

Thanks forum.
