First ... its great being back full force as a owner of a SHO. Its been probably 5 years since I sold my SR 72 to the nudist colony ....... that car that I sold for $500 ( cough..bu** sh**) has a few more dollars put into ..... and I will leave it at that. I hope to see the car at one of the chump races in florida. larry has asked me to even drive it. He s actually a pretty good guy.
My new ride that I bought in August this year ... I think I paid more for it than I wanted to ... but got it anyway. I wanted a black on beige 90/91 with no sunroof. This was the closest i could find and it was in tampa. Black on black 90 no roof early production date.
First the car has no ETAC ... just std a/c buttons ... thats the first thing that told me this car was diffferent. This weekend in pulling the motor .... I noticed some other interesting tidbits.
First .... after pulling my last motor 6 years ago .... this one came out with no issues .... didnt forget to undo anything and to be safe I wrote mostly what I disconnected and color coded the connectors with zip ties to make reassembly easier. I always pull a motor with the tranny attached as a total unit.
- the main rubber 5/8s break line going from the master cylinder to the anti lock control wasnt straight as all of the other cars I worked on ... this line is S shaped which made it easier to get the tranny up and out. This hose in the past was the only hard stumbling box to get the tranny clear
-second item i noticed odd ....was the temp sending unit on the metal line that goes to the bottom of the block. Went to look for the connection .... no sensor .... no wire. They did it different with this early 90 model
-lastly ..... most people on a previous thread i started .... i noted that I thought i had the old small clutch and flywheel in this vehicle. Most people said that they doubt it .... with recalls and swapping out clutchs the SHO gurus was sure it had been replaced assuming this car came with the old version clutch and pressure plate.
Well in removing the tranny from the engine .. sure enough there was the original clutch with pretty worn fingers ..... smaller version ...... which finally makes me believe this car does have what the previous owner stated ... 76000 actually miles. This is what I paid the big money for and my new florida title says the same .... 76000 actual miles.
The old clutch ... pretty worn i think validates that it was the original clutch and never changed out.
My plans for this motor are simple. New front and rear main seals. New oil pan seals. Oil pump seal and the rear seal on the back of the block. All new cam seals ..... intake seals ..... oil well seals. new t stat .... new water pump ..... new radiator .... new heater core hoses both sides ....new upper radiator hose .... new oil bypass hose ... new all new ac lines .... refurbished compressor .... i already have a new SHO SOURCE catless Y pipe ... new o2 sensors .... new complete cat back walker exhaust ..... car should be engine and tranny wise brand new .....
I dont expect it to eat oil because of the low miles ... and this will be my daily driver to and from work. Once I confirm the reliablity of the motor and tranny .... than I will go to doing the outside of the car ... paint and some rust removal ( the car spent some of its time in NJ )
It will need some work to the interior but not a lot ... carpet and dash is a 10 ..... passenger seat ok ... drivers seat needs some work ..... rear bottom seat is fine .... back top seat needs to be replaced ... worst of the group ... looking for a Gen 1 back seat in black leather in good shape.
I will take my time to rebuild the motor ..... since i only have sundays off ... and hopefully in a mth have the motor back in .... and running smoothyly
I plan to clean all the rust off in the engine bay ... and repaint .... all the little bolts and parts taken off will be grinded clean with my 8" steel brush wheel and painted .... all the rust on the block will be cleaned off and painted engine gray .... will look and hopefully run like a new motor
Its great to be back and hopefully not this year but next year with the total restortation done ... I will be able to make the 2013 SHO convention
