I thought this might be interesting. I just rebuilt my engine and had to take it for an emissions test. I am running a pretty much stock setup. The catalytic converters are burned out for sure. When I took them off to pull the engine(out the top-what a nightmare), I found that if the y-pipes were turned upside-down large chuncks would fall out. so after shaking the heck out of them and beating on them with a hammer to clear out the mess, I reinstalled the y-pipes for the time being. I took it to the emission station knowing I would fail. Well as it turned out the kid that tested my car had a green 94' mtx. He took it easy and really tried to pass me. Well, it failed, but hardly. it was only 20% over on HC and 16% on nox. Not bad for a car with no EGR or usefull cats.

Not bad indeed! My mustang actually (barely) passed emissions with burned out cats. I put the Guarenteed(sp?) to Pass stuff in the tank so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. But I could hear chunks rattling around in the cats and everyonce and a while the chunks would fire out the exhaust when I revved it up. Can't believe I passed!

half-way there, I think.
My old 89' with no cats passed with flying colors on the readings. The people at the testing station didn't realize that it had no cats.
