I just got one from a 96-97 SHO; runners, tank & TB. The thing that amazed me is the car has 140K on it [it was wrecked] but there are actually POOLS of oil in the tank when I removed it! :oogle:  Is this normal? I plan on swapping in new Motorcraft plugs in the spring and would like to get this mani & runners extrude honed & the TB bored by the time I swap plugs so I can just do everything at once. Is it worth the time to get that work done? I know every engine is different; and no need to tell about about cam welding.

Another thing I noticed was how black & sooty the lower intake mani runners & secondary butterfly's were. We should be able to pickup a good amount of power if they look like this one did! I also bought some Gumout intake mani cleaner in a spray can. Should I follow the directions & spray it in to the SHO's mani or is that not a good idea on the SHO?

Geeze, I hate being a n00b.

Very common. It's a mixture of oil from the PCV system, gasoline from the EVAP system, carbon from the EGR system, and grit that makes it past the air filter, all heated and baked on by the heat from the engine.

Cleaning it you just have to be careful your cleaner doesn't strip the finish off the intake. Non-chlorinated Brakleen is best for this. If you're talking about cleaning the one on the car, don't bother unless you're removing it. It's real easy to break free a chunk of carbon which could cause problems if it gets into a cylinder.

P.S. When your cams fail (and they will), we buy cam failure cars for $500-$1200, so please get in touch with us. We've been looking for a '99 cam failure car.

Uhh, yeah I'll keep that in mind.....considering I just picked the car up 4 months ago for $7800 & you think I'd let it go for that scrap? You got another thing coming buddy. My SHO qualified for the extended warranty which I have until the car reaches 105K miles; it currently has 64K on it. I've been assured by the dealer I go to [they partly sponsor me] said they will have no problems fixing the damage 'when' they go.

I'll just clean the spare one & install it in the spring.

Poor Guy. ESP won't do you any more good than the LAST Guy Screwed by a Grenaded $15,000 Unobtainium Engine. They will only pay out UP TO the value of the car, NOT go to ANY Lengths to restore your loss.
You'll also find that they don't value the car now NEARLY as high as they did when they sold it to you.
Good Luck, Enjoy your ride.

Ditto what E1 said. No warranty in the world is going to pay for 10 grand in engine repairs for a $2500 car. Just get the cams welded. Then you can have fun modifying your SHO. Go to v8sho.com for an eye-opening experience.

I would do some research on V8SHO.com

I am not trying to be nasty, but the warranty will not do all the dealer promised it would. I deal with extended warranties that don't always want to cover the 2500+ transmission jobs on cars. And remember, you most likely have that to look forward too also.

I am aware of all of these things; I've wanted a SHO since 2002. I was looking into a Gen I/II but after I saw a 92 grenade its tranny and my buddy's 90 blow the diff pin out [nearly hitting my car at highway speeds] and knowing the ATX's don't hold the torque of the six, I decided on the V8 SHO. I wanted the V8 SHO because, well, the V8! But I wanted a car that was comfortable, easy to cruise with and had great power, and an ATX tranny [after 3 MTX cars, I wanted not to shift]. I'll be getting the cams welded soon [like as soon as I find someone in SE PA to do it].

Mr Anonymous: Here's your 99 cam failure car, go rape that one and leave mine the **** out of it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7947965402&category=6783 You may not think so, but I found that comment rather rude; I love my SHO and would much rather fix it then give it to a car killer.

We're actually looking for a '99 to make a race car out of it since they are the lightest of all 4 years of the V8 SHO.

In any case, sorry you took offense to a simple business proposition. This is the internet, you should try not to let such little things upset you. When your cams fail, if you decide to keep the car, we'll also be happy to sell you a replacement engine.

FIRST of all if you love your SHO you WILL go get the cams welded. There is a place that will do it about 2 hours from where you live. Click the link below:

http://www.v8sho.com/SHO/FolksWhoWillWeldYourCams.htm#Sunbury Motors

Secondly, he is not a car killer, he and Kirk have brought quite a few back from the dead!

Your aftermarket warranty isnt worth swat when it comes to a cam failure. Your gonna end up getting way less than the car is worth when they total it. So just spend the day and the $500 and go get it done. :thumb:
