Input / Output Shaft Seals (Half Shaft Seals)

I need to replace the half shaft seals on my '89. I have to add about 1.5 quarts a month to keep correct level. Transmission has 370,000 miles and original seals.

I've been researching the previous posts for information. One question arose.

Where is the anaerobic sealant specifically used?

If everything is rotating what is the purpose of a "sealant"?

The sealant goes between the outer rim of the seal and the case of the tranny.

Why can't RTV be used? It is used on the camshaft seals.

you don't want to take the chance of some rtv getting in the trannie and blocking some passage up. you wouldn't believe how small some of the holes in the valve body plates are.

He has an MTX. Hard time finding a valve body on one of those...

FWIW, I've never used any sealant and haven't had any leaks....

Sounds good. I go the "no sealant" route. Besides any leak is better than the leak I have now!

haha yeah i guess you'd be hard pressed to find one on a MTX, just trying to help.

Actually, I had one installed at a dealer without sealant and it did leak. The seal is just below the level of transmission fluid, so it can find it's way out. That's why they specify a sealant on the outside of the seal. Be sure to check your fluid level after doing this job.

I tried ordering several tubes some time ago when it became apparent that Ford was discontinuing/obsoleting everything to cut costs, and found it was no longer available. :shakehead

Anyone have a superceded (updated) part number, or recommendations based on what they're now using?
