Does anyone know what size socket would fit on the inner tie rod? We got a new laithe at work and i'm dying to try it to see how much better it is from our old one. I think if I can get a socket that is the proper size I can part it and turn a piece or steel to lengthen the socket enough to work like a regular remover. If I had the ones I ordered I could just use it for reference but i'm not supposed to get it until tomorrow afternoon and I want to make the tool tomorrow while i'm at work so I can use it this weekend when I change tie rods. Thanks.

Just go to AutoZone and borrow the right tool. Sooooo much simpler.

You can't actually fit a socket over the hex flats, because there is a round **** in the way from which the flats are machined:

Ok I see now. I didn't know the little humps were there. I'll just go to Autozone.

Went to Autozone and they had all of the sizes I didn't need to do the job so I had to go to Checker to get the right stuff. What a difference inner tie rods make. There was at least 1/16th lateral movement in both tie rods which meant they were as limp as ever. Now no more vibrating under soft braking and roaming all over the road lane.
