My 91 3.2 MTX alternator is seems to be dying. I have a higher output stereo, upgraded headlights, and my battery is in the trunk. I don't know if all this stuff is putting a hard load on my 90 AMP alternator or it is finally dying of old age. Is it possible to have the alternator rebuilt to output more amperage? How much could I increase the amps and still not cook everything alive? Just curious what my options are.

Thanks!!!

I'm sure you could have the alternator rebuilt to a higher amperage. I had that done to my old 89 Taurus at a local shop. Had it bumped up to 125amps (guy told me originally built it for some kind of ford limo). Another option is finding a high output alternator made for your car, but they tend to be hella pricey.

Yes. An electric motor shop can add more windings to increase the output. I am not sure the electronic components in the built in voltage regulator would be up to the task, but the people at the shop should be able to figure that out.

My stock alternator (130amps) was rewound and got tested at 163 amps by the local alternator/starter rebuilder.
