Are neon lights legal to have, on your car, while driving? I know it's different from state to state, but what is the most common law? I thought it was only illegal if you can see the actual tube. The glow effect is ok. Is this right? If they are totally illegal, then why are they sold? Aren't these people small time drug dealers??? I'm lost, someone find me!

it definitely depends from state to state. In MA, they are illegal because they are supposedly containers of explosive gas... too bad neon gas is a noble, nonflammable gas... I'd call your rmv up and ask them.

I would say that they are illegal in most states, thank god. They get away with selling them for off-road use, as in car shows.

Around here it's illegal to have any colored lights other than white/amber showing on the front and red/amber on the rear. So since the neons are visible from all sides they would be illegal.

erik, you are right but you are wrong. they are illegal, BUT they are illegal because ALL aftermarket lighting is illegal in MA. you can't even add foglights legally here. if you change your headlight bulbs to soemthing that is not OEM spec, its illegal. this is what the cop told me when he pulled me over for having the neon lights, bright headlights, and a shitload of other violations. he let me off with a warning tho. my dad's friend got pulled over in a ghetto part of brockton at 2am, he was on his way home from work, well the cops thought he was a drug dealer ( he was driving his corvette) so they pulled him over and tried to impound the car because he had fog lights and they didn't think they were factory (they were) and they didn't think it was his car (he has a vanity plate with his last name on it lol) well, he got out of that. anyways, cops are dick and neons are illegal. they look sweet as **** tho. i had mine on almost every night for a year, most cops don't care unless they wanna screw with you. sorry so long

They are illegal to have on while the car is moving in PA. I have the tickets to prove that. I got a ticket for undercar neon, plate neon, and led washer nozzles. They can sell it because they state it is for off road use only.

no Bryan, it seriously says in the Massachusetts General Laws that they are illegal because they contain an explosive gas! ROFL, Mass, you crack me up!
