Have a question or two.

Can the clip be installed by only removing the shifter boot or does the whole center console need to be pulled? Looks tight in there...

Any additional tips or directions?

Thanks,

Steve

I had to take the whole console out. I did find that the mopar clip even when pinched pretty good does not really hold. The clip would fling off after every attempt to get into first. But I have a solution; after putting the clip on, I wrapped a zip tie around it. The zip tie/mopar clip have held up for about a year with no breakage.

ziptie+mopar clip is what I used till I got my rod shifter, I managed to replace it only pulling the shiftboot and plastic shroud piece on the console. Just have to be really good at working blind...

Well, I stopped by Frederick's car yesterday and put the clip in there so he could drive it on home.

I ended up pulling the console since I couldn't get my big hands in there otherwise.

It was necessary to really crimp the Mopar clip closed with a big pair of pliers before installing it (I pushed it downward from the top. I then put a zip tie around the top of the clip to prevent it from backing up and releasing.

Frederick volunteered to reinstall the console since he wanted to get some confidence that the repair was going to hold and that, should it not hold, he could get in there and manually hold it together.

Don't think that will be a concern...

Steve, once again many thanks. This old 18 year old car would certainly not be on the road without your handy services. As a reference for others who run across this issue, I wanted to share the following photos to go along with Steve's write up on the fix.

So what am I supposed to do with this leftover piece?...

Thanks again.
