when I am @ a light...I notice that my RPM is @ about 750 RPM is this normal or is 1000 normal for idle, and what can I do to fix this if this is a problem.

Also, when I pull into my garage and put my car in park I notice that the engine rev's up to about 1,150 RPM's and then it fluxuates from about 750 and 1,000...??? is this because an idle cant be maintained???

please help, it scares me a bit, because my car runs GREAT, but I've began to notice this lately.

thanx

800 is the proper idle RPM, but, it is higher while the car is in motion. Sounds like you need to reset the idle. Are you familiar with this procedure?

1. Disconnect battery, Turn on headlights for 15 minutes. This willdrain any charge which may be present. This will reset the computer in charge of your idle.

2. Reconnect battery. Start car. Turn on every accessory you have, A/C on max, headlights, blinkers, you name it, turn it on. Turn your steering wheel all the way right, all the way left.

Your idle program is now reset. If it still acts funny, do it again.

I think after you reconnect the battery you turn OFF all the loads, then start and let the car idle for 30 seconds, THEN turn ON all the loads, turn the steering wheel, radio, AC MAX, max fan, press brake, lights on high beams. I don't think anybody bothers to honk the horn though! :D

if the idle program doesn't work, try the IAB valve cleaning. It is the cylinder like device mounted right next to the throttle body parallel with the car. It has a connector on it. This usually needs cleaning or it won't idle correctly.

The most important item is to let the idle settle on its own for at least 30 seconds. The ATX cars also need to have the shifter placed in D. I don't think the horn would make much difference and it will definitely alert the wife and neighbors.

All the loads must be added within 70 seconds of the start. You can also disconnect the keep alive memory plug off the negative battery terminal rather than the whole negative cable. Just wait a few miutes an reconnect it. That will save you from having to reprogram the stereo presets and clock.

The base idle speed for the 3.0L is 790-810 rpm. That is with the IAC valve diconnected and the SPOUT plug pulled. The idle maintained by the EEC is closer to 900 rpm. The ATX idles at a lower rpm to prevent the excessive pull on the transmission.
