Hey, this morning I came across a small problem with the idle. After a 5 min. drive, I reved it to around 2K, then let off. It went down to try to "find" idle (down to ~500, up to 1,000 and back down). The engine would actually stall in this process. Any thoughts? If it means anything, the conditions were around 60ish and VERY humid...first time in a while for this.
Regards,
Justin

Fuel Filter

CLogged Injector

Idle Bypass sticking

Or TPS

THe idle bypass maybe sticking in the humid weather... had it happened on my Stang you can romove and clean it and reinstall it, you should be able to use gasket again. This fixed my problem. the temp fix was hitt Idle Bypass with hammer to free it up. (Believe it or not) Light taps though :)

I had a very similar thing happen. After looking on the www.v8sho.com site, I saw that some people have fixed the problem by unplugging and re-inserting the TPS sensor. This worked for me.

According to his post its not an high idle. He saying the way I interpid it is that his car is seeking idle by going high and low. Tha the job of the Idle Bypass.... he also mentioned that the car stalls when doing this..... there again I would look at the Idle Bypas since that the intended funtion of it. IMHO

PLease dont think I am mad.... Just in case the above post came out wrong. :)

By all means dont rule out TPS, but my experience with Ford motors when they do that type of act as described above start with mechanical and work your way to electrical. If he hasnt replace Fuel filter this may also contribute.

Once again I MEAN NO FLAMING.......... :)

I had a surging problem with the idle from 800 up to about 1600 and back. This was a couple of months ago and the only thing I did was run Gumout Injector Cleaner through a tank of gas. The problem left....not sure if the cleaner did it or not but so far so good. I did not have the stalling problem however, just a surging idle RPM.

Just a small update. Today, I drove a little bit (weather was the same), then tried to duplicate the problem, but I couldn't do it. Could this just be a matter of the ECU figuring out what's goin' on w/the weather (as it hasn't been cool/humid here for a while)???

Justin, I think that might be quite feasible....let the computer figure out the problem...(miraculous healing as it were) Almost like the problem with the CD changer...it is very moody. And sometimes my radio keeps playing as I exit the vehicle.

Hi, I had a similar problem. Once in a while after a hiway run, if I stop and leave it running, while say running in a store for second, it starts idling up into the 3kRPM range on its own. Hit the pedal and it fixes it.

Also I've had an odd instance where it jumps a little between 500/1000RPM when sitting idle. But I too dumped some STP fuel injector cleaner in and then tossed some Octaine Booster in on my next fill up and things have been good ever since.

Also, I've always used 92 octaine or better since I got it back in '99. My SHO is a black '98 with about 36k miles, a K&N filter with a slightly modified original airbox.

Rod,

Try what is mentioned above. Certian things work, on some cars but not others so try one thing at a time until you fix it. Check the TPS first then chectk the Idle bypass to see if it sticking......

Stand on driver looking at air box. Find the throttle body to the left (TB) you will see black sensor with 3 wire coming out. This is the TPS sensor which is connected to the throttle body. This tells the PCM how much throttle you are giving your car. Good Luck

Hope this helps
