IDing Cam Caps

So I had my heads done at a machine shop (seals, guides, 3 angle) and I have a question about IDing the cam caps. Is there a way to tell which caps were from which head. I know I can get them in order since they are marked I or E and numbered with the arrows pointing to the front or the engine. The problem is that I have 2 labeled the same....2x I5's, 2x E3's ect. What happens if the E3 from the front head gets put on the rear head? Does this matter? If so, what is my solution? Thanks for the help

I had the same problem a while back. I dropped the heads off for cleaning and the cam caps came back in one bucket.

I was able to tell which were front and which were rear by looking at the stampings and comparing the imprints. The stamps on the rear head were distiguisible from the stamps on the front head. It was subtle, but I could see that the die hit the rear head with more force than it hit the front head and all of them were cockeyed the same amount.

I was aslo able to feel a lip on the bearings when I had the wrong cap in place.

Thanks. I will check the stampings to see what I can figure out. Just for clarification, you mean you could feel a lip where the cap meets its other half on the head when it is bolted down, correct? Also, if I get one mixed up.....what should I expect?

Yeah, they put mine all together. Guess they figured that they were labeled so it didnt matter.
