Is there any little thing that I could look for on a removed mtx to see if at one time it was rebuilt. Found a supposibly rebuilt MTX for $250, seems too good of deal, it was from a car that was totaled.

Really the only thing I can think of is to check out seal between the case halves, if its been rebuilt you can usually see that the area has been cleaned and the sealant, in some cases, will be a different color than the stock stuff. Other than that, I cant think of anything externally that would give you an indication if its been rebuilt or not. What was supposidly done on it?

I have no idea whats been done to it the guy just said it used to be his friends car and he totaled it and his friend had it rebuilt at one time. I kind didn't think that it would be possible to tell either but as long as it works thats good enough for me.

If the case was sealed with the proper sealant after a period of time it will look just like whatever the factory used to seal the case with. If there are black blobs of RTV around the seal then run from it like the plague. If there are blue blobs around the seal, run from it like the plague.

The only thing that will really give you any clues as to whether it was rebuilt or not will be the condition of the blocking rings in particular and sometimes the synchros.

Pay close attention to the seals: axle, shift shaft and input shaft. But even then it'll be tough to tell.
