Sure, you can keep it. You will, of course, have to pay them for it.

Expect to pay up to 1/4 of the payout back to them. Offer them $400 for the car and see if the adjuster will bite or make a counter offer.

If you do get it back, be prepared for either a salvage title or, at a minimum, their declining to offer full coverage on the car again.

Not all insurance companies are like that. I totaled my 94 and they just let me keep the car...sure if i ever register it again it will have a salvage title. Also, I am rebuilding it...so once I'm done putting things back together I have to take it to someone to have it certified (certified roadworthy again).

My Sho was totaled back in 96 just a small fire under the hood and I bought it back from the ins. They gave me I think $5500 and I had to pay I think $300 to keep it. Sence the car never changed hands I kept the title and when I fixed it and put it back on the road it never showed up on the title. They should give you a price if you say you want to keep it. I thought it was 10% but I could be wrone. I also had my mustang stolen and I bought that back also so I could have the $ figures mixed up.

When my '93 Tempo was totaled by a deer, my Father-in-law bought it from the insurance company for $200 when the adjuster came out and decided to total it and I said I did not want it.(of coarse it was sitting at his repair shop.)

Ask them, the worse thing they can say is no.

If you have a loan on the car, then you have a lien on it, and the insurance co. pays the lienholder first. Period.

You can ask for the salvage buy-back value, you can try to negotiate a price, but I think you're probably looking at $500-$1000 for the buyback (at a total guess).

Sounds like a case of "Let it go.."

My 1990 SHO was recently totaled and I bought it back for $400. The $400 was deducted from my settlement payout.
