I found the following part on FPO;
"Emission System, Vapor Canister". Would this be the part that I seek? Also was wondering if this is a commonly replaced part on the older cars? Mine is a 90 with 156k.

Have the old gas smell when I shut off the car. I replaced the fume purge solenoid with the one from my 93, and if anything, the smell seemed to increase. Instead of just being at the driver’s side, now it seems to be pretty much around the whole car. And BTW, the smell is only exterior, never smell it in the car.

Did you replace the vacuum hoses from the canister to the purge valve to the intake manifold? How about any rubber hoses going to the canister? If these hoses are cracked that could be where the fumes are leaking out.

I replaced the hoses from the throttle body to the purge valve to the T located under the radiator, using the small inline reducer that was part of the OEM setup. The old hoses were badly cracked. I replaced them with fuel hose.

Still wondering what the average life expectancy is on this part!

Try bypassing the purge valve so the canister is being purged all the time. The charcoal doesn't wear out, it just gets fouled with too much gas.

This is not a good idea. You will have a lot of unmetered air entering the intake manifold, like a sizable vacuum leak, and your car will run lean.

If you're going to bypass the system you should plug the vacuum port on the intake and just let the gas fumes vent to the atmosphere which is ecologically unsound and not that safe. Better to get a new purge valve if you suspect a fault here.

Maybe your canister has a leak somewhere. You can take it out and look for cracks then seal them with some epoxy. Epoxy and fiberglass if you want it extra strong!

Well, my 93 never had any kind of gas smell, so I used the purge valve from that. I guess that I can try using the charcoal canister from that for a test before I buy one. Just a little tired of stealing from Peter to pay Paul.

Although I have read on the ShowTimes FAQ about bypassing the purge valve, I immediately filed into the "things that I won't do" category. I figured it's there for a reason.

I will post my findings.
