Since the cam sprockets bolt to the cams, I was thinking that If I block the cam sprockets in place, I could remove the heads without talking off the front cover (at least the lower portion).

The tensioner will prevent you from reinstalling the sprockets.

But the sprockets will never move. they will be in the same position, so there won't be a problem (in theory at least)

You're going to run into two problems:

1. The tensioner will not allow you to get the belts back around the sprockets as mentioned above by Scott.

2. As soon as the belt comes off of the sprockets, it will loose tension and fall around the bottom sprocket. There is no way of verifying correct timing then.

If you're going to attempt this, you will eventually have to remove those covers. Make it easy on yourself and do it now. :)

Ahhhhhh... I just re-read the initial post to make sure I had my info right. In theory it should work, but how do you propose to keep the sprockets in place?
