Wow! Good thing we caught this. I put back on the crank sprocket and i have about 5 degrees of play between the key and slot. Nothing is too mangled or worn, so my next move is to get some of that locktite stuff and a new crank timing sprocket. Wish me luck and any advice would be great along the way.

Crank Timing Gear:

E9DZ-6306-C No Stock at regional warehouses (supposedly), List is $74.67. Use a locator service or have your local dealer do the locator for you if they can't get it.

Woodruff Key:
E9DZ-6B316-A Discontinued, No stock at regional warehouses (supposedly), List is $7.56. Again, use a locator to find these at dealers across the country.

IF your crankshaft shows any wear, be advised you're likely to be heading down the same path I did. The rust dust is the woodruff key & crank disintegrating.

Good luck.

I guess I should consider myself lucky. I found the red rust during the 180,000 mile service, but it turned out that the Woodruff key had sheared and had enlarged the crankshaft slot under the crankshaft damper, but was fully intact under the crankshaft timing belt pulley. The timing belt pulley is still a very tight fit so the valve timing is accurate. The damper was able to oscillate on the crankshaft, crack the keyway and erode the diameter of the crankshaft because the damper bolt had come loose. My fault. My painful lesson learned.

I now must install a metal shim between the damper's bore and the smaller diameter of the worn crankshaft under it. The key slot in the damper was not enlarged so the damper is still intact. All of the wear and damage was done to the crankshaft. There was a significant amount of the red rust colored dust inside the timing belt covers when this condition was found. I now see that this is not a rare instance among the SHO community.

The metal shim, the custom cut keyway, the Loctite on the washer portion of the damper bolt and the upper limit of 126 lb-ft of torque are now used to keep the crankshaft damper in place. I am thankful that the timing gear was not affected by this crank cancer. I am knocking on wood as I write this.

I just paid my ford dealer $87 for a new crank timing gear. It is being shipped so i should get it tommarow. I did this in hopes that it would come with the woodruff key (they couldnt even find a part number for the key).
What is a locator service? How do i contact one? I neeeeed this key...

Meanwhile....there is very little play between the crankshaft and the sprocket. Most of the damage was done to the key, but there was sure a lot of dust (enought to make my CPS cut out).My plan is to get the new key nd new sprocket and see how much play is still left. If there is any i think i will just coat the whole damn thing in locktite and pray that it lasts.

On a different note.. My (i think its called the harmonic balance) crank pulley for the accesories has a big ass chip in it. The chip is on the inside edge that holds the belt in. It has not affected belt wear and i dont know how long it has been like this. Does it warrant replacing? If so...How much?$?$?

I'd attach a pic but i dont know how.

Timing Gear does NOT come with a woodruff key, sorry to say. When you remove the broken / worn key, look at the recess groove in the crankshaft that positions it. If there's any wearing on the crankshaft itself, keep in mind this is going to allow the gear to move the key, which is what wears / breaks the key. Byt the time 3 weeks & 3 attempts to fix were done on mine, I had almost 20 degrees of slop. Once that key & shaft go, it goes downhill fast.

Big Valley Ford in Stockton CA (209) 956-4510 has them listed for you. S&C Ford in San Francisco (888) 259-5433 also has them listed. Again, E9DZ-6B316-A (that's B as in boy, not "8"). They should have 4 in stock. I'd buy 2, in case, especially if you're making the drive up there.

I had about 3 left in stock myself & found a dealer with 15 of them, so I bought 10 today to replenish.

If you call a dealership, they have a computer network of other dealerships' inventories. This is the locator service. Dealerships are hesitant to use them for customers, because then you're bringing your business elsewhere.

Hey thanks man, i just drove to big valley ford and bought one (oh well, i can drive back). Luckily when i put the key into the slot on the crankshaft there was absolutly NO play and it was a very snug fit...I may yet beat this malignant cancerous beast...

Its all back together now and seems to run fine. The timing is perfect and the new crank timing sprocket fit like a glove on the crank and with the new woodruff key. I guess the true test of time will be the only proof. Thanks again for everybodys help!! If it wasnt for this forum i'd have given up on this car long ago. Thanks again!!
