I posted ealier about a problem involveing a long banging noice from my sho. I have recently found time to start inspection and after droping the oil pan it seems clear to me. Piston #4 was missing both rod bearings. Yes when I mean missing there was no top nor bottom bearing. There was nothing except allitle metal in the oil pan. It disapered. Gone? The other bearings look bad to, unknown date of last change.

Ill post some pics later!

Yup, its not too surprising the Rod Bearings were toasted by then. Changing them every 150k miles seems to be a very good answer. I will change mine a bit prematurely at 120k. They seem to be the weak point in the bottom end.

It looks like im going to have to replace the crankshaft, due to the damage caused on the spun rod, is it possible to change it while the engine is still in the car??

Well, techinically yes I suppose, but honestly you'd be better off just finding a good used motor and having it installed. Ultimately the labor cost might be less for an engine swap.

Labor Cost? I do all the work myself, price is the main factor, and autozone had a lower rebuild kit for 90 dollars but at this point further inspection is needed.

You said that there was no #5 bearing at all?? Just found the exact same thing on my friends 89 motor... and we're in the process of doing an engine swap right now. Do you mean the #5 cylinder from the crank or flywheel? I'm not sure how they are numbered, but the one he was missing was the #2 from the flywheel, or the #5 from the crank. If you found it to be #5 from the crank, I find it quite coincidental that both ones we've found were the same bearing COMPLETELY missing..LMK

Any engine that has a missing bearing connot be repaired in the car. Consequently the crank will have serious wear issues. This also means the engine has been running with low oil pressure and has most likely worn every lubed bearing surface.

Billy shoe said it best. With that one bearing completely gone, the other bearings were starved of oil, as were the cam lobes and lifter buckets. If you know how to "mic out" an engine, you could determine whether every bearing surface was within spec. A very difficult task indeed, even for experienced mechanics.
