I think there's still a lot of confusion about how the ABS works and what the Teves bleeder tool does.

The bleeder does run the pump, etc, as described, which helps to cycle fluid through the pump to facilitate a flush of the old fluid if that's what you're after. My understanding is that at the end of the cycle it also leaves the valves open so that a system bleed goes through the ABS system. This is how I've used it in the past (with apparently good results): Cycle the tool, then purge/bleed all four lines while the unit keeps the valves open. When you're done the ABS should be free of air and old fluid.

FWIW I've not seen a schematic of how the ABS system is plumbed, although I admit I've not really looked for such a schematic. If I remember I'll look in the Helms and the service CD tonight and see if there's anything in there.

I spoke with an ex-Teves enginner about the Mark IV system. The bleeding tools keep the valves open only when the tool is in use. When the tool shuts off the pump after 60 seconds the valves all have all been returned to their normal position.

The hydaulic schematic in the Ford shop manual does not show the the third line connecting the master cylinder to the HCU but the Teves hydraulic schematic does show the third line. I'm going search for it an then post a link to it.

ABS Hydraulic Schematic from the service CD:

Brake hyd schem

I think the valve status is a non-issue for bleeding, but for a full flush one wants to get whatever fluid is in the pump out, too. It looks like the other simple thing to do for a full flush is to disconnect the low-pressure line between the Master Cylinder reservoir and the ABS pump reservoir and drain both the MC and ABS reservoirs.

So, if I ever need to flush these dudes again (they've both had Castrol SRF for some time, so my bleed/flush routines seldom happen any more), I think I'd drain and refill both reservoirs, bleed everything, cycle the test unit, bleed again, test for hard pedal, done.
