Well, looks like it's time to replace the tranny after 110K miles on original.

1. Any thread links that already cover this? If so, I just couldn't come up with the right combination of words in the search engine.

2. How tough is it to do in a home garage on jack stands?

3. Any tricks or specific things to steer clear of?

4. About how many hours to do job? Good news is that removing the exhaust system will be a piece of cake since I just had it off not long ago and all the bolts are in great shape and anti-seize compound was used to reassemble.

5. Does the Ford rebuilt tranny include the torque converter? What about the Doug Lewis rebuilt?

6. To replace the rear main seal does the oil pan need to come off?

7. Any other prev. maint. items to do when the tranny is off?

Take it to Doug, this is NOT what you want to do on jack stands in a garage! :oogle:

You can do it on jack stands...you will be removing A LOT of things. Its more bark than bite, although it will take probably a good chunk of the day to remove the tranny. Torque converter, I don't know 100% but I would have to imagine it is included. If not, and competent torque converter rebuilder can beef one up while rebuilding it for about $150. You might as well drop the pan and do rod bearings while you are down there when you do the rear main seal, but the pan doen not have to come off to the the rear main if you don't plan to do bearings. Definitly fab up or borrow an engine brace.

Yeah, you can do it, anything is possible, but your going to be pulling a 200lb plus tranny from the bottom. Your going to need a transmission jack, if not, and you try taking it down, what are you going to do when it starts to tilt off the jack? Just trying to take on a big bulky transmission under the car, on jackstands, does not sound fun.

what is easier, dropping the trans or taking it out the top with the motor?

Probably taking it out the top, or drop the whole frame and work from there!

I did it all by myself using jack stands and 2 floor jacks. I like to use 2 heavy duty tie-down straps to help support the tranny on both removal and install.

dropping the subframe is the only easy way to do it on an ATX and it does not require a tranny jack

I would appreciate some comments and specific suggestions from a couple of you guys that have personally done this task.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to get into a task this time consuming.

Thanks

Well, I have personally removed an ATX motor/tranny assembly from my car and installed them. It is not simple, but I don't think it was anywhere near impossible and really wasn't that hard. You just have to disconnect everything, pull the radiator and yank them out. I have never done anything from the bottom, but I found the top rather simple.

It is easier (from the top) to pull the motor/tranny together and detach and reattach outside of the engine bay.

I've always pulled the engine and trans together on every other car I've worked on. So I think I'll do it that way when the time comes. If I buy a manual for this car which way is described? Out the top or bottom. I'm guessing they describe pulling it out the top.

Yup.

If you do buy one, get a Helms, it is the Ford factory manual. Either that or a factory CD. Anything else, like what you buy at Kragen is a waste of time.
