Hello All,
New member with a 2015 Taurus SHO w/PP wondering if I need to worry about the SSM - 45053 regarding the Power Transfer Unit.
My vehicle has 11k miles and I bought it two weeks ago.
Should I bring it back to the dealer and have them change the PTU or wait until it starts to smell/leak?
Vehicle is still under the 7 year / 100,000 mile Power Train Warranty.
Any advice would be appreciated.

PIs are required by Ford to do it every 30,000 miles I believe. The most successful interval tho has been 10,000 miles. Of course, using Motorcraft fluid. Would not exceed a year at any rate between fluid changes.

Double the above interval for RDU fluid changes, as it needs renewing too!

The more the better. If it takes 30 minutes to do maybe every other oil change. That should keep fluid fresh and relatively clean. Sure wish mine had a drain plug.

I just did mine this weekend. 2013 PP with 56,*** miles. It drained only about 10 oz of actual fluid and the fluid wasn't in bad shape. Minimal junk on the magnet too. So maybe the PTU was serviced before? I added 16 oz of Mobil one gear oil. I can honestly tell a difference. The car is a lot smoother.

Did you pull the downpipe to refill it?

Also, from what I have been reading, it is the heat from the down pipes that could be a reason why the PTU/PTU Fluid is failing. I am going to chop a couple more inches off my rear springs (to level the rear) again this weekend. While I am there, I am going to wrap both DP's with some heat wrap to try and keep the PTU cooler. Just some cheap insurance.

Very cool. Glad to hear that works. Did you put the original vent hose back on or just stick with the fuel line?

I put the original vent tube vent back on. It is was actually really easy. If you have access to a lift, it makes it really really easy. I would get some header wrap/heat wrap and wrap the DP's since you are there. I didnt think about it until after I was finish. I have access to a lift, so I will run over and wrap those up probably next weekend.
