Just going through challenge of the first time replacing water pump, timing belt, Crank pos. sensor and oil seal.

Once I got to timing belt installation I am a little confuse from reading the manual regarding "compressing" the timing belt tensioner in a vice. yes, I know that but after compressing it how does it put tension on the timing belt?

Why would the tensioner design be so different from 3.0 to 3.2???

I carefully use a bench vise to compress the piston. Then I stick a small allen key in the hole to hold it compressed. When the belt and tensioner are both properly installed, pull the key out.
