How much time do I have on these bearings?

Ok so I've had 2 SHOs go under because of rod bearings, I don't want a third.

Thing is, the 92 I have now has every record of every oil change...which is Mobil 1 5W-30 Synthetic every 2,500 - 3,000 miles...and it's never ran low on oil.

But, it has 180k miles on it...and I can notice a slight knock for half a second upon cold-*** start up.

Is it just the valvetrain noise, or are my bearings beginning to fade?

You have already had 2 cars fail because of rod bearings? That should tell u to change them asap, there shouldn't even be a question. It only takes about a day and 100 bucks. With that knock, change them.

Yeah just do them and get it over with. Also post pics of the engine internals with that mobil one in there.

I KNOW I need to do my bearings and with SHOWYA's failure I'm making that a priority on my car.

About the noise: Get a mechanics stethescope, you can easily pinpoint odd noises with one

Ya I know what you mean, the bean had less than 140k on the clock and here's what it looked like when I took it apart:

Badcranksmall

Badbearing

:(

I was going to put this off until NEXT payday...but I'm going to go ahead and do it now. $67 now and not a lot of lunch for the next week or so is better than a new car later.

94 SHO ATX here with 210k. No knock great oil psi, "BUT" after what all i've seen here with sho's having less than 150k I am making it a priority as well. $75 is chump change compared to a total rebuild.

I think this might be my problem too, there is no way I can do the bearings myself, how much do you think it will run if I take it to a shop?

Most shops will laugh at you, and or refuse.

regardless if you hear it or not, ALL engines will exhibit cold start up knocking as mileage is increased.

Too bad you don't live in PA. I'd do those rod bearings for you! Whatever it takes to keep SHO's on the road. :thumb:

Here's what I'd do if I were you. Print copies of the rod bearing tutorials (K Metros, SHOPP) and pick up the bearing kit at RCM auto (includes gaskets and bearings). Then go to a local shop with a good reputation and tell them that you had intended to do the job yourself but just don't have the time right now. Show them the tutorials and parts and explain to them that most SHO owners do the job themselves, that there is no need to remove the engine or do anything dramatic like that. Try and give the shop the impression that it's not that difficult a job (because it's not) so that they don't get big dollar signs in their eyes or reject the job outright thinking it's a huge project.
