I'm going to try to put this motor in, and I was wondering how much clearance I need. My garage is pretty small, not too much room in front, and the cement slopes downward just past the door. The car is parked backwards, and if I pull it out from the front, I can see an issue with the boom hitting the top of the garage door, if it was wheeled out the front. Can you pick them out of the side? or is that a lot harder? I dont have a hoist yet, as I am going to rent one for the day I do it, and kazoosho will be coming to supervise my dumbarse! :laugh_ti: and make sure I dont break something.. But with him driving a few hours to get here, I want to make sure I have everything 'in place' as much as possible. If it has to get pulled from the front, how far would I have to wheel it backwards to pull it out? How short can I make the chains? If i pull it out of the garage, then I'll be on uneven ground, and that isnt good. Any ideas? I'll go get some measurments here in a second..

with my door up, i'm at like 7 foot maybe 7 1/2, but the frame is @ 6'9" or so. With it all the way against the back wall, I can get 3 feet in front with the door down, then I have 8 feet or so. Can u pick it from the front, and push the lift to the side? That geometry could work... I just dont know how tall its going to be ..

do it from side??

I had nearly same dilemma with garage door being a issue last summer when it was so hot outside I needed to close the garage door in order to raise and clear the boom, but still an issue because I need to keep door open so won't be like sauna room, Lol. After tho it all over... I lowered the car to sit on subframe via cencrete block laying sideway instead using jack stand and my disc brake sit close to ground about 2 inch and I yanked motor out from right passenger side instead of traditional front method. It worked for me. Do you have side clearance?

Oh yea... its a 2 car garage, and its dead center. So i have 6-7 feet on both sides. The chain track is directly above the motor.. so that kinda sux.. i can take that out tho.. i'll pull the rotors and all that out so I can get it extra low maybe... just in case.. :)

yea man.. i dont see wh u wudnt be able to pull it from the side...the hoist will still be giving the upward pull right?...i used a 3 ft peice of chain bolted to the head where the intake bolts up, and it was about as short as u could get....i wud suggest getting the car as low as possible on jack stands, concrete blocks are jus askin for trouble...and if i recall the hoist was prolly about 6 1/2 or 7 ft when i had enough clearance.....

neway.. good luck with the swap...hopew this helps:thumb:

yea, i was thinking of pulling the rotors and everything to get it as low as possible. if it comes out the side, I have almost 8 feet of clearance, but if it came out the front, the boom would have hit the top of the garage door frame. Good to know they come out the side. :) Should be getting my hoist tommorow, and I'll have a better idea when its actually in the garage.

heres the way i do this with all my cars (i HATE moveing the cherry picker plus mine has a wheel that doesnt always want to turn.) this is how i do it... i jack up the engine from the front and just push the car back lift some more and push it back till its clear of the car then i set it down in front of the car.... just just how i git-er-done, i think its much easier and much safer to do it this way cuz a swinging motor is BAD!!! iv had motors almost fall before from them rocking to much when i was moving the cherry picker.... this is just my 2 cents, just another idea.

well thats my problem... This is a detached garage, and its exactally as long as my F-150 plus 6 inches.. :) whatever that is.. :) I was wondering about the swinging motor... sounds like if it comes out the side, I'd be better to hold it, and let someone else pull on the hoist.

And MTX... just because I am close to having the motor in.. that still dosent mean I can afford my halfshafts, or the other 1/2 of my brakes... :) But, by early Feb, I should be done. The car itself has been sitting for almost 18 months, so you can imagine all the little screws and nuts that 'had to go'. Subrame is still cool, and only one spot of rust by the gas door, but who doesn't have one of those. Plus I'm not trying to race at all.. I'm not really a mechanic, so I figure taking my time is the way to go. Its just sad how much the parts are for these cars. In the time I've spent saving, and collecting parts for my car, I've been able to actually buy the same stuff for my truck.

I think I bought 4 new shocks, 4 new springs, new poly bushings all around, all new tie rods, inner and outer, I rebuilt my alternator, put in a new waterpump, pretty much everything short of head gaskets, and rod bearings. 225,000 miles on origional rings, blows 0 smoke, pull's 00 codes all day long, and will smoke the crap outta its tires... (even if only for a short time..) I think I put about 600 into it, thats what the cost of some nice struts on my SHO.. no wait.. inserts... not even full struts.. :( Some times, I wonder if I should just drag the SHO around the neighbor hood, just to let the neighbors know whats coming. :)

Like I say in my electrical quotes.... Quality work, done fast, at a reasonable price... Pick any two.
