I have just been told that my p/s pump is going. I have a very bad RPM driven noise that has been traced back to the pump. Is this a common faliure at 105K or did I just unlucky? If the belts are over tightened, could this lead to early faliure?

I still have the original PS pump on my 92. It's now 247,500 miles. The tighter the belt, the faster the bearings and seals wear out. I run my belt tension a bit less than factory specs.
