I was at summit racing today and saw some 400w 6.5" sony xplod speakers. Are they any good as far as lifespan and quality are involved?

Go with something else...Sony tends to skew the specs on their speakers...for the price, you could AT LEAST get some Pioneer 6.5"

They suck, for clarity, spring for some alpine, the S-series line can be had for 80 bucks a set and the R-series for 179 a set, it'll sound the best of any speaker, trust me, all sony car audio breeds problems, just like MTX..

Again, a good rule of thumb.

DON'T BUY SPEAKERS FROM REPUTABLE MAKERS OF HEAD UNITS.

Clarion, Kenwood, Sony, Alpine, Eclipse, etc, etc,etc..........................Forget it. If you want REALLY GOOD speakers, even if money is an issue, get entry levels of GREAT car speakers. Such as a/d/s/, Boston Acoustics, MB Quart, CDT, Focal. Maybe I'm out of touch with what 75% of people will find acceptable in their vehicles. But if you're halfway serious of getting good speakers in your car, buy from these manufacturers. If you're serious, you'll need to spend $150. I may be forgetting some excellent speakers. But if that's too much money, by all means, I'm yakking too much. Then listen to others, not me. beer beer beer

i agree with the infinity comment, i don't have much experience with the referecne series which is their cheap stuff, but with kappa which is their good stuff, i have nothing but good things to say. the perfects are pretty much taht. especially the subs. i ran 2 perfect 12.1's for a while, they were amazing, clean and tight and loud.

as for the sony's, they aren't 400 watt, they are just trying to trick you into thinking that they can handle that power, and the power handling isn't as important as they make it seem anyways. that is probably the peak measurement for the pair. so it would be 200 peak for each speaker, and probably 100 rms per speaker. RMS is the important measurement. for most part, consumer speakers, like kenwood, sony, pioneer, will all be basically equivalent for the same price. that is my experiecne with them.

I just got a pair of focal polyflex's (low end, but nice) for my car, haven't put them in yet, can't wait to hear em.

OK, we're talking apples and oranges, then. Go to high-end soundoffs. The only Alpines and Infinitys you will see are those in cars in which THEY are sponsors and all components are from that manufacturer.

I won't say they are crap, each ear is different. Each one has his own tastes. You may be extremely happy with Alpines or Infinitys. And each has top end speakers that may indeed sound better to you than the economy side of the best.

In my own experience, I have yet to hear a set of Alpines or Infinitys that I would want to have in my car. I have also seen and heard Alpines totally custom BMW M3 with reshaped dashboards and custom speaker placements and kaotic's favorite F#1 ultra high-end processor that costs more than a Powerdyne supercharger and its' support mods. It is an incredible sounding system, with Alpine speakers. But I guarantee it would sound even better with a pair of Focal Utopias or Dynaudio 240 ESOTARs.

No doubt the focals, dynaudios, morels, or rainbows would sound 10 times better than your everyday consumer speakers. there is no disputing that. those units also cost much much more than your average speaker, mostly because they are much more than your average speaker. if you are looking for something to sound better than stock, there is nothing wrong with purchasing infinities, alpines, sony's whatever. the truth of the matter is that what sounds good is what sounds good to you. the best way to make a decision is to listen to the speakers in your price range, and make a decision based on that. the truth of the matter is that not everyone is an audiophile and needs to have 1000 dollar speakers in their front doors. it'd be cool, but it is in most cases unnecessary.

For the money, Infinity Kappas are great. I swapped out the factory JBLs for Kappas all around. Did that about five years ago. They still sound great and they hold up to the extreme temperature changes in the northeast beautifully.
