How fast does the SHO engine rev?

I just got a 94 SHO mtx with 99k miles. When I am at idle and push the accelerator it will hesitate before it revs. Also, when I am driving in 2nd or 3rd gear at normal rpms and floor it, it slowly climbs till I get to about 5000 rpms then it accelerates nicely. Iv'e never drove another SHO before, but it seems like its lacking the low end torque it should have. Is this characteristic of all SHO's or is something restricting my engine.Thanks.

It could be a bad throttle position sensor. I replaced mine for a problem with thumpy shifting, because when it acts up it makes dead spots in the accelerator (possibly at the beginning in your case) and after replacing it I felt bit more low end pull. At 3950 (~4000) rpms the second stage of the intake open up on SHO's and the car pulls a lot harder so that's typical, but you could be having a problem with the low end. I'm sure others will have some good advice too.

ohio is for hustlers
That's pretty normal, what you described about not having a ton of low end power. The yamaha engine is a high revving engine, and makes better power up top. If you do that in ANY standard transmission at "normal rpms" car really you will get that sort of "lack of power" feeling. The engine can't downshift like in an automatic to a better suited rev band, and you are putting too much of a load on the engine. The engine cannot burn the amount of fuel you are asking it to with the amount of air it is getting. The engine likes revving, don't be afraid to take it up there.

Yeah the low end will always be much slower than the top end. As far as the hesitation when hitting the gas pedal in idle (do you mean neutral?), that could be a TPS or something else.

Take a look at the MAF. It may need a cleaning. A dirty MAF will slow down the reaction time of the sensor causing poor throttle response. A bit of electrical cleaner and a careful hand with a toothpic can clean them up nicely. Good Luck
