firebat....I concur it seems like a lot of pulleys doing essentially nothing, and I would have loved to do just that, but the tensioner would then not work. Also, as Kevinspann noted, I wanted to have the ribbed side of the belt running on ribbed pulleys. I thought that I might be able to run the bels straight from #7 (alternator) to #5 (crank pulley), and then over and back under the tensioner pulley #6, substituting a smooth pulley for the ribbed one. However, the belt running straight from #5 to #7 then hits the CV boot, so that wouldn't work, unfortunately. That would have been the cleanest option.
