I looked on autos.msn.com and they say its 18.40 gallons for the tank size of a 1993 SHO. For some reason that doesnt seem right to me because filling my tank i have never payed $46 for gas @ $2.53

Hmm, that sound's about right, I have a '90 and my owner's manual says it's a 18.6 gallon tank (the regular Tauruii (sedan and wagon) have a 16 Gal. one) but $46? Wow, That is a lot of money! My '90 Cougar had an 18 Gal. tank and it cost about $35 to fill it when gas was $1.89 a gallon.

All SHOs were supposed to get 18 gallon tanks, but some did get the smaller ones from the factory (mistake).

Your low fuel light comes on when there is still anywhere from 2 to 6 gallons of fuel left. That leaves a typical fillup of 12-13 gallons with the guage on Empty.

The extra fuel helps to keep the fuel pump motor cooled by keeping it submerged.

If anyone wants an 18 Gallon tank for a GEN 1 Taurus or Sable, I have one that includes the pickup tube, float, and straps. Used, in decent shape (some surface rust). I had a tank in my SHO that wouldn't fill up past 14.3 Gallons, got my hands on a couple of 18 gallon ones (15.6 gallons when in the RED), so I want to get rid of one.

New, the 18 gallon tanks cost $150 locally, with NO hardware. The 16 gallon one is $125. I'm looking to get $100, shipped.

i have put 17 gallons into mine. Yes, it's dumb to push it that far.
this past summer I came frightfully close to putting 50 bucks into a fill up.
i think I made it to about 48.50.

16 gallon was the STD --- 18 gallon tank was optional. I think you got the optional 18 gallon in your sho or else you would have had gas shooting out. I have a 16 gallon and pumped over 15 gallons in my tank maybe once and thats doing alot of driving after light comes on. Low light AFAIK is supposed to come on when theres 1/8 of a tank.

The large tank was generally not an option on the SHO, it was just part of the build. There are examples of SHOs with 16g tanks, and those were either early SHOs or probably cars made when they'd temporarily run out of the larger tanks.

My GenII is a no-option SHO and it has the 18g tank.

Yeah, I just got the note (Been off-line for about a week). What I was trying to do was point out how much a new 18 gallon Tank costs, the oddities of my original tank (14.3 gallon fillups MAX?), and yes, I do have a complete assy for sale if someone wanted. However, the Manufacturing vaguarities of the 'Last year for that Generation' Taurus, expecially cars like my '91+ made for interesting combinations. I've heard of similar issues with the '95 SHOs getting wierd Sway-bar combos, Intake manifold parts, etc.

I filled up the other day when the needle was below the E, 15.94 gallons, and at $2.25 a gallon for premium, it came out to $36.00 even. I'm so glad gas prices are starting to come down.

I've fit 19 gallons in my tank. The car was running on fumes at the time of fill up. Usually it takes about 17.5-18. After the initial stopping of the pump, I can squeeze another gallon to a gallon and a half into it before its topped off.
