The lights on my 89 sometimes leave a little to be desired, so I'm thinking of sticking in some replacement bulbs (not the fog lights). I've heard of high-wattage ones melting the plastic light covers, and I don't have the money for true Xenon HID lights. Are those cheap 9004 "blue" imitation ones actually good, or only if I really like the color blue? What about PIAA super white or soomething?

Those cheap blue lights will perform a lot worse than the current bulbs you have in there now, I guarantee it.
Either put a higher wattage headlight wiring harness in and use 80/100 watt bulbs, or go with the PIAAs. They're not really blue, but put out a very bright white light.

How about the PIAA Xtreme White Plus 9004 replacement bulbs? Or is this another cheap HID imitation? I know PIAA is a good brand, so I'd trust them more. Or should I go with the Super White ones (the older model)?

sunny San Juan Bautista,
I have heard good things about Phillips Vision Plus bulbs. I'm not sure if they make a 9004 (is 9004 used outside the US?). I was looking into H4 for a Hella 6054 kit for my truck and it seems like the Phillips Vision Plus bulb is favored in Europe. Enough brighter that they aren't for the US market. Worth looking into if you're going to spend the money on PIAAs.

I used stock, cheap imitation ones, PIAA 9007's, and the true HID conversion (that Kirk now is using on his 97, since my car's out of commission).

I felt that given the right bulb setup & clear bezels, the HIDs are a HUGE difference compared to even the PIAA bulbs, and were well worth the (less than) $500. The PIAA bulbs aren't cheap either, at about $75. The PIAAs are better than stock 9007 bulbs. I ran them for a year or so with no problems with the wiring that the 80/100 users ran into.

I have Blue Krypton SHOWOFF Lights. They are definitely way brighter and after a while turn almost pure white. THing is people think that they aren't doing their job because they can't see the light. I think the reason for that is because blue isn't exactly a color our vision can detect from a distance or when compared to another color such as yellow. I'm guessing thats why regular bulbs come with a very slight yellowish tint. At night in a dark suburban street they come alive. $24.99.
