HID Prototype

How do you like my prototype for HID headlights, im curious about the asthetics... does it look okay? I already have the plans drawn out, i just have to get a little input first. (that was photoshopped) (but only the headlights) My plan is for the high beam/ angel eyes to be the interior lights, and the low beams to be the exterior lights, and use the same side marker as the turn signal. I figured i might as well use the existing wiring for the stock headlamps too (that worked for my hella fogs ), so i will use/break a couple headlight bulbs so i can use their plugs.

I dont like how the fishtanks look with the HID... Maybe it'll grow on me.. but just something about the way it looks? shrug

I guess i could take the green cover that is over the HID lights and extend it all the way to the center bumper... hmm, now im curious how that would look... but i dont know how well they would mate.

for true HID, you will not be able to utilize the factory wiring. Sorry.

Well... luckily i am not planning on using true HID... that is way out of my price range. I found some nice look alikes made by Hella, and another brand (cant remember) that are just basically driving lights (but they say they mimic HID)... im not planning on passing any state inspections... thats why im trying to keep the old connectors intact. I just want something SHOwey that i can place in there from time to time. so, maybe i should have titled this something more along the lines of "New headlight look (trying to mimic HID)" laughing sorry to dissapoint ya, but my budget will not cover true HID

Or, you could get an HID conversion kit for under $500 that replaces the 9007 bulb (like I used to have), and the Sylvania X1010 HID fogs (like I now have), for $250.

This is the first step for my HID look alikes. I dremmeled out the front and rear of a stock sable headlight that i found at a junkyard. This gives me a nice surface to mount to, and will let me keep the stock turn signal (with a slight angle mod)... the next step is to do some scouting for lights to use... im thinking about checking out walmart (they have everything dont they?) well, if youre bored, im looking for a 3.5 inch diameter light with angel eye and something around 3"-2.5" for my low beams... (remember i am a poor student, so im not looking for anything expensive)

you're not getting the angel eye's cheap. they only come expensive. Maybe i'm wrong...

but that is something i've been planning for a many years i just haven't had the money to put down for it since i was going to do true HID...

new developments in HID has been made and a new type of lights is around the corner...HID's that aren't so annoying to the other drivers...i'm prolly gonna end up waiting that one out see how it pans out...plus i get to do the performance after mantainence but before cosmetic

Hey for all you that wish to go true HID, i found a who already made his own... from scratch basically... but in my opinion his layout doesnt look as good as my idea.

A projector type set up (like ChrisR's) would be a great idea and HID's can be had for pretty cheap now ( www.misterjung.com ) I really like those but wouldn't really care for the angel eyes, BTW, BMW is sueing APC for stealing the "angeleyes", M3 mirrors, and z3 fenders.


So yes i would buy these, if they didn't have angel eyes

The design stage looks pretty good. However, I would definetly NOT use driving lights as your low beams. You are going to want to get a low beam from a car.

Actually, the X1010 HID fogs are equally as effective as my low beams, and have a wider beam pattern (and I have them aimed correctly too).

I'm running Sylvania Silverstars 9007's as well, and low beam vs. X1010 are comparable straight-ahead. X1010 + Silverstar high beams = niiiiiice for long black stretches of road.

The X1010's fit in the stock Gen 2 housing location too.

Oh, and Herman Anker's setup cost close to $2000, IIRC.

even if the lights can't be hid they stlll look awasome and enhance the car 100% if you do make them i would put them in my car (and i do like the way the fish tanks look with them

James, not to put your concept down (because I like it a lot), but cost is something you're going to have to consider as well.

Oh, and your sig is SLIGHTLY off...

Well, Kirk Doucette has my old 9007 HID headlight conversion kit in his 97, so that can be done anyway. In fact, the Gen 3 reflector style is much more efficient than the Gen 1 (9004) or Gen 2 (9007) setup is.

I originally bought the kit for about $450, and tried to arrange for a group buy for $425 shipped, say, back in May of '02 or so. Nobody was really interested then.

I picked up the X1010s a couple of months ago, and the price on the Sylvania site was "$549 (crossed out), down to $299" or something like that; they've since dropped the price to $249 a kit.

Both kits came with necessary supporting hardware (kit 1 was bulbs, ballasts & ignitors, and plugged into the stock harness; X1010 kit came with complete housings / bulbs, ballasts, wireless on/off keyfob switches, remote relay & all wiring necessary). The 9007 conversion caused you to lose your high-beams, not that you really needed them for 80% of your driving anyway - that was the only thing I didn't like about them at the time, was for really long dark stretches on wet asphalt, it was harder to see with them.

Thanks for the correction Yamaha v6... thats sorta embarrasing doh but i fixed it... as for costs:

2 headlights from junkyard $45
Plexiglas free (donated by friend)
Pilot Navigator NV-605 ~$40 (from sounddomain.com) (for the High and the angel effect)
Optilux Model 1002 Fog ~$40 (from Advance Auto Parts) (for the low beams) (theyre projectors)

and heck... thats basically my costs my friends... basically $130 or so...

(forgot to add what light did what function)
