so drain the oil, unbolt the y-pipe and drop the pan? should I get a strong magnet to roll around in the old oil to collect metal shavings?

Get some pantyhose, stretch it across the width of your oil drain pan. Drain the oil through the pantyhose, it will act as a screen.

Metal filings on the pantyhose = rod bearing go bye bye.

I suggest doing this with the oil warm, not too hot.

You could or get a wide pan to catch the oil and move it around. Disposable gloves wouldn't be a bad idea. My spark plug thing sounded like the piston hitting the head. Check the easy stuff first. Check the plugs, the timing area for belt slap, and the oil. then dig further. I would get a good listen with a large screwdriver to the ear or an automotive steth. as was mentioned. I think they are cheap at the parts store. You can get a peek at the price range at the parts store online.

Don't do anything with the oil just yet.

Identify source of noise:

A. Eliminate accessories as the source
1. remove belts
2. If noise is gone replace belts one at a time
3. Remove belts/idler brackets and crank pulley. Remove timing covers and inspect timing components.

B. Eliminate Clutch/trans
1. does it make the noise with the clutch in or out or both
2. In neutral and in all the gears with the clutch in?

C. Eliminate drive train
1. Does the noise change while you're driving?
2. Does the car drive OK otherwise?

If you haven't at LEAST made it through part "A" you shouldn't even be thinking about a rod bearing problem.

This just happened about three hours ago. It startswhen i rev it up and then continues untill it bogs down the comes back at a higher rpm

So I woke up pulled the front three plugs and they werent mashed but they were the oem plugs aha and got the long screw driver and found out the sound is coming from where the chains on the cams are. Not a rod bearing!!!

I'd pull a valve cover before the oil pan. But, if you strip or break the VC bolts don't get too ****** off.

I would first check accessories just to be sure and it's easy. Then pull the intake and valve covers. Look at the rear plugs, inspect the wires, have instructions and parts on hand. Kevin is correct, be very careful with valve cover bolts as they are very soft and can break easily. Maybe look for a parts car and get a few extra to have on hand.

Can I use 3.2 atx bolts? and Its weird its deffinitly in my valve cover but i can feel t in my clutch

Bump. Does anyone know where I can get proper fitting rod bearings? The ones on the SHO source say you need your crank machined, Any one have some they wanna part with?

For the most part, he's correct. Most times spinning a bearing will damage the crank journal. Easiest fix for that is swapping engines. Have you dropped the pan yet to determine how much damage was done?
