Hey, I had posted a few weeks back about this upon doing my cv boot replacement, (after ripping it while doing the balljoint), I assumed i had damaged the axle seal upon reinstallation. So last week I took it apart and did the axle seal. I made sure not ot damage or catch the seal itself with the axle, at all upon reinstalling. I used another axle I had from my old parts car.. My question is this. The end of the axle had some light surface rust, from sitting in the trunk of the parts car for a while... When I wire-brushed it, I did take off a bit of material, in order to make it smooth... Is it possible I took enough material off to make the diameter of the axle too small to seal perfectly against the axle seal?! This didnt leak at all before the replacement of the cv boot, and now its leaking a good sized 2" spot or so each day.. :HELP:

how did you go about installing the seal itself? Better yet, what did you use to remove the old seal? The seal to trans case surface is very touchy. Trans case surface scratches easily, and the seal iself is very easy to bend and distort if not installed properly. And did you use a sealer n the seal to trans case surface?

To reinstall this seal, I used a wooden block carefully placed over the outside surface of the seal. I used the Ultra Gray RTV between the seal and the trans, and getting it out, I had pryed up against one of the outer edges, and it eventually came out. None of the surfaces where the seal seats in the trans were damaged whatsoever... Think my theory of the axle being too small due to me wire-brishing it is off?!

The wire brush would not have damaged the surface enough to cause a leak. Have you looked closely at the leak, to see if it is leaking from the seal to axle, or the seal to case?

Maybe the seal was damaged to begin with, or you knicked it with the splines of the axle during reassembly?

NO, I made sure not to touch it with the splines of the axle... And I havent determined what its from yet... I need to get it on a life or something, and check it. If it ends up being the seal to case, what do I do from there? As far as the wire brush, on the larger part of the axle, (part right after end of cv boot), there was enough rust on it that it flaked off some of the metal, thats why I was wondering if maybe there was enough where there wasnt a good seal on the axle... Any good way to check? The trans fluid is all over under there!! :(

AHA! Whe you said rust in your first post I figured on just simple surface rust. Silly me... ( I live in CA :D )

If the rust was bad enough to actually ause cancer and flake metal off, then you need a new axle. There is no way a seal is going to do its job on a rusted, dimpled/rough/scratchy, whatever surface.

There also is a spring on the back side of the seal, this sometimes get's knocked out when installing the seal. What I do to prevent that is pack the back side of the new seal with Trans Assembly **** or Vaseline(It's the same thing)That will keep the spring in place when installing a new seal and it is harmless to any Automatic or Manual Trans.I also would use an axle seal installer to prevent damage to the new seal. They sell them in many part stores.

Nope, I definitely didnt catch the seal at all during the install, I made sure of it. Hasnt someone on the East Coast experienced this with the Seal?!?! I have no lift or any way to inspect where its leaking from, not even any ramps... :(
