i had this sputtering problem on my 90, the CEL comes on, i changed both the O2's and the whole entire y-pipe, when i changed the y-pipe yesterday, car ran great all day. today i start it up and the same problem occurs. the most annoying thing in all this is that i can't check my codes cause i'm missing the grey wire. this is really frustrating as i'm just dumping more and more money and the problem is not solved. i don't know how to describe it exactly but the car idles at like 700 rpm, right below the 1 and when i give it gas, its sounds sick. the only thing i can say is that at low temperatures like 40 and below, the car is normal. if anyone could help please, or i'm just gonna give up on this SHO, i can't even check codes :shakehead

Find the gray wire.

It often hangs down, sometimes even falls on the exhaust manifold and melts...

Might be a MAF. Try disconnecting it, starting the engine and see if drivability improves.

yes and you dont need the connector, just electrical tape a paper clip to the bare wire that remains...then you can pull codes.

also, have you done much maintenance as in plugs, wires, seals, etc...? your plugwell could be full, drowning your spark plug wire and plug...causeing a mis in certain cylinders. also a bad coil could be at fault, or something as measly as a clogged fuel filter

so you see, that gray wire is the key that helps open the door of your problems revealing the solution within.

What he is saying is you dont need an intact connector to run the codes. Just jumper the appropriate wires together (this is where the electrical tape comes in) and run the codes.

yes if your grey connector has been 'ripped off', or otherwise damaged, you can still use the remaining wire. strip the insulation back a bit, get a peice of elec.tape ready and tape the paperclip to the wire, not the insulation, or there will be some insultation...

Should I have written, "Find the gray wire young grasshopper?"

The point of the message is that the codes will likely tell you what is the real problem. To replace parts hoping that it solves the condition is just guessing and usually results in a larger outlay of cash than required. The codes are there to help. Use the force of the codes, young Luke.
