OK heres what I got. I have all factory sound system JBL except rear speakers Pioneer and 6 disk Alpine cd changer. It sounded pretty good until about a month ago. Now I lost my mids and higs are all muffled and sound like crap. Not just on front or back but both. When I turn the fade to rear I still get buzzing from front passenger speaker? Is my deck going bad? Is it my modulator? I have had disk changer in for about 2 years now. Maybe a bad amp?

Some songs sound ok but some songs sound very very bad. It seems I lost some of my volume also (maybe just loss of midtones). Any way any help would be nice

First...I love your car! Very nice.

Your topic actually sounds like a RickyFrat (or you other system guru) question but I'll give it a shot and hope that somebody else will chime in here if I'm wrong.

You say that some songs sound o.k. and others do not. Question: Are these songs on the same CD? If they are different CDs then you might want to take a look at the condition of your CDs. Also, when was the last time you cleaned the CD changer? Music quality is only as good as the changer can read. Perhaps there might be some dust in there that catches every now and then while the cd is turning. There are cleaners sold for DVD players that do a wonderful job of cleaning the lens. I personally use one that requires no liquid, it just has very soft "brushes" mounted to a CD that cleans the lens.

You could be getting a bad amp. The buzzing sound could indicate that or it could indicate a short some where.

When I replaced my stock head & speakers I decided to use a new amp. Simply because the power that the stock JBL system really wouldn't do my new speakers justice. I would suggest going to a new amp just for the sake of sound quality. Those amps are old technology and it's really not that hard to change over.

Hope this helps out somewhat.

What it sounds like is that the gain is all the way up. Bad distortion is usually asscioated with that but you probaly didnt mess with that unless something bumped the gain adjustor (if there is one).
A bad short is probaly not possible because it either works or it doesn't. Though the alternator could be going out and giving feedback. This is what I dont like about electronics, you can have multiple reasons for one cause.
I would say that the amp has gone bad and has lost control over the gain. If it turns out to not be the amp then its the head unit. Id replace the amp first though.
To determine if its the amp disconnect the wires from the amp to the speakers and find the speakers wires from the head unit and connect those to the speakers and see how it sounds. That should help isolate the cause.

I beg to differ on this point. I had a pretty bad short in my old system in one of the doors. The wire had had worn thru in a spot and when it would touch metal it would distort badly although the sound was still there. It was low and garbled but it was there. So that's why I say it could be a short. Could is the key word. I'm no audio expert by any means but I do have one bumpin system and I did put it all in by myself.

I'm puzzled with out it being in front of me. Check all wires. Even the ones for the changer. I have seen amps go kinda screwy by the way you are describing your problems. I would check all wires first very carefully before you go spending any money.

ok, dont replace anything until you test every posibilty, i just got over a basically the same problem with mine and it was the head unit. i would find someone else with a system and plug the rca cables from there deck into you amp and use their deck to play your speakers. um, to see if your amp is bad i think you would want to find an old speaker that you know works and hook that upto your amp, ask me if you have any questions i might be able to help you out i got mine to work it just took a little effort
