Oil light ever come on during all of this? If so, it's definitely the rod bearings. I'm having the same issue but it's more of a tapping than a loud knock. Check your spark plugs to see if they're all tight. Maybe even buy an oil pressure tester and see if your oil pressure is below 12.5 when the engines up to normal temperature.

Make sure that your oil sending unit is plugged up, the connection gets loose easily. If you are lying sqaure under the car, its the round unit up on the block in the back.

know what the funny thing is that i already have the rod bearings have had them for a while now and have the oil pan gaskets too. so i guess i will just do the rod bearings anyway.

Why are people thinking rod bearings? Does a rod bearing make an engine sputter and buck? From what zerg1024 is saying I would be thinking something that causes misfire and/or lean mixture.
