OK, I searched and searched, hope this isnt a repeat thread. I am new here, so Hi all! I have a 94 dark blue ATX. The problem im having is that when I put my subs(2 12"Kicker Comps) in the trunk, and try to hit any kind of bass, the lid pops open. I tried spraying the heck out of the locking mech. but to no avail. Halfway up the volume ****, *POP*, every time. Anyone have a fix for this? BTW, it has a cable release next to the driver seat, and no, my key doesnt work in the trunk, lol.

Wow.. Your locking mechanism sure is loose.. My guess is tha tthe Subs are vibrating the truck lid enough that they are literally popping the rear of the truck out, or causing the latch to let loose. There are 2 hard plastic adjustable mounts on each rear corner of the trunk lid.. I would loose them to 'tighten' the trunk and try to lessen the amount of vibration you are throwing through the deck lid. You might also want to try to put some sound dampening (yeah, I know, defeats the purpose, but if the body flies apart, what is the point?) material on the deck lid to keep the sound waves from setting up those harmonics in the metal.

wow, thats spooky, i tried both pices of your advise, still happens. I put in Dynomat Pro, throughout the entire trunk, very expensive, but it still does it. At least the exhaust doesnt rattle with the bass anymore, lol. I guess the next step is to replace the mechanism, we'll see. Thanks. :thumb:

Hmmm. That's pretty wild... Can you have someone turn the stereo up while you are back there, can you tell if the latch is actually releasing for some reason or if the lid is warping enough to pop loose? If I recall, the latch is similar to our door locks where a '******' swings down and around the loop that is mounted to the rear of the car. That '******' will move based on the lock mechanism & the keyless & the pull wire to the floor by your front seat... It really shouldn't move otherwise, but if either component is loose or out of alignment, and the trunk is vibrating, I suppose it could cause the latch to open? Is the latch still closed covering the U gap in the lock mounted on the truck lid? or is it open? If it is still closed, then maybe the lid isn't actually shutting and latching all the way (loop mounted too low on the rear of the car) and just pops open because of the trunk lid vibs from the Sub???
Speculating.. wish I had pix.
good luck..
A camera and light watching it from inside the trunk while it was doing it would be a kewl way to diagnose it too... Personally, I wouldn't climb in there, but your trunk lid doesn't seem to stay closed anyway, but you might be hearing impared in that close space with a sub... ;-)

ok, well, my neighbor, the "block" mechanic, lmao, said that it isnt latching completely. Wore out I guess, I ordered a new latch, should be here next week. Let ya know then. I thought it was the cable, disconnected it, and being my dumb@ss self, forgot the key doesnt work in the trunk. so I had to pull out the backseat to open it. Sure glad that wasnt to hard, LOL.
Later :bonk:

Its done! I took the old latch off to replace, figured what the hey, i'll spray it real good from this side. I did, put it back on, and havnt had a problem since. Now I just hope i can get a refund on the return of the new one :thumb:
