I have a 91 mtx. The other day I was driving and i pulled up to a stop sighn and my car was stuck in 4th. I couldnt figure out what was stopping me from shifting and i was slightly on a hill with cars behind me so i had no choice but to try to take off. after gaining some sort of speed and wearing on my clutch i heard some sort of loud air ******* sound. Once on flat land i pulled over and still couldnt switch out of fourth but could put it in nutral.. My uncles house happen to be rite down the street so i mannaged to get my car to his house to jack it up and find that the foarward backward shift linkage was missing the pin connected on the tranny end. I tomporarily threw a framing nail to substitute for the pin. Now when i go to shift it seam iether the car is still stuck in 4th or 3rd gear. Whats weirt to me is that all the stick shift movement seems normal but when i put the shifter in the reverse position it goes foarward so i have no reverse..... So after all the pain and suffering i had my car toed to my house and sence it had arrive it now only will shift when the vehicle is off... if anyone has any advice or has an idea as to what the issue may be let me know... Thanks

Get the lever on the transmission and the shifter mated together properly, and try to set up the shifter properly. There will be a how to write up that tells you what position your tranny levers should be pointing when you are in neutral.
Where is the bite point on your clutch pedal? If it is way down in the carpet, it is time to consider a new clutch assy. The throw out bearing and the pressure plate fingers wear to the point you have no travel left and you disc doesn't disengage easily.
Also, make sure it is automatic transmission fluid in your manual transmission. That affects your initial engagement and shifting too.
