A good friend of mine askes could i start the car i am freezing? I say ok i start it and say dont go anywhere with it...He askes a few times can i do a burn out? I say no! ( He is on a long strait away of ice and frozen snow) then i walk away and he does it And it hits the rev limiter a bunch of times.... :madflame: i chase after him and then he pulls over... and says where is reverse? i was so ****** i kick him out of the car and get in to back it up to where it was... Then i notice i cannot find reverse... The only gears i can get it into are 3rd and 4th.. I some how make it home and relize when i am driving i can still move the shifter around with it in gear.. If i mess with it enuf i can find revers and 2rnd..... I have no idea what to do with this thing..... I need to fix it before my dad gets home ( Sunday) and dont have that much $............PLEASE what do you think is messed up???????????????? If it has a cable shifter still, one of the cables may have broken or popped off.

Make your friend pay for any damages. It's his fault. At the very least, give him a nosebleed so he won't ignore you again.

Time to trouble shoot the cable shifter failure.

Use the search feature of the forum. LOTS of info about the lovely cable shifter :nut:

Find new friends.

Kenny is probably on the mark, the shift cable that moves side-to-side has probably popped off.

Ouch man, ouch
You can see one of the cables if you're looking through the engine bay, and down at the tranny.
The other one, you'll see on the bottom, under the car, attached to the trans. Most likely, if you remove the center console, and unbolt the shifter, you can pull on the cables and one will continue until you pull it out all the way. :frown:

My 89 has a similar problem. Sometimes the lower ball and socket will come off from the transmission linkage and leave me with just 3rd and 4th, or 1st and 2nd. Ive been doing a temporary repair like every 3 months to keep it going and not have to put a rod shifter in. What happened most likely is the socket got stretched out just enough to cause it to slip off the ball when going from reverse to first. What I do is take some tin foil and wrap a layer or two over the ball on the transmission linkage and then put the socket that connects to the shifter back on the ball. It will be tight, and should stay on for a good amount of time.

happened to us too a long time ago

sounds exactly like what happened to us a long time ago in out old 89, my dad got so used to fixing it he could reach under the car, find it, and pop it back togeth without looking sometimse haha.. but yeah IIRC, its not a hard fix (replacing the socket) good luck, any update?
