hey guys. i have a guy that will make me a very good deal on labor to change my bad head gaskets and i want to have him do it. problem is the auto part stores want about $500 for a gasket set with all the stuff. i already have a set of valve cover gaskets laying around so i really dont wanna pay that much. i am told i need exhaust, intake, head, and valve cover to do it right. is this correct?? anyone know where i might find a better deal on parts?? anyone have parts they wanna get rid of?? any help would be greatly appreciated!!

thanx

Josh at SHO Nut is about $350 for the 3.0L Upper Gasket Set. Otherwise, IF they're still available individually, the 3.0L head gaskets went for $90 ea. at Ford last summer.

The Ford full upper gasket set which includes 3.0L head gaskets is P/N E9DZ-6079-D and lists for $348.38 (FordPartsOnline.com shows it for $294.39). The individual HG's are p/n E9DZ-6051-A but are obsolete. Fel-Pro makes a head/upper gasket set p/n HS9821PT, which RockAuto.com lists at $368.74. Josh at SHO Nut has listed the upper gasket set with the 3.0L HG's in the past, but his site currently only lists the 3.2L set (which includes everything that the 3.0L set has except 3.2L HG's instead of 3.0L's). He gets $143.73 for the 3.2L set, which even though you can't use the HG's (unless you decide to do a 3.2L upgrade), it's a great price for the rest of the gaskets.

Probably about another $90-$100 to buy them individually. FWIW, the full gasket sets include things like injector seals and o-rings, cam seals, TB and IAC gaskets and several others which you should consider replacing due to the extent of the work you're doing. I'm guessing that gasket set you found on FPN was for the SLO based on the price. Their website should allow to select parts by motor. FWIW, FordPartsOnline.com uses the same Trade Motion front end for their websites as FPN and FPO has slightly better prices listed, although Torrie may be able to meet/beat most of them if you talk to him in person.

If it were me, this is what I would do:

- SHO Nut 3.2L Upper Gasket Set: $143.73
- AutoZone Fel-Pro 9821PT HG's (2): $105.98

That's $249.71 + shipping, tax, etc. for gaskets, which includes every conceivable gasket you could need for only ~$44.00 more than you're planning to spend buying the gaskets piece-by-piece. You could then turn around and sell the 3.2L HG's and the extra valve cover gaskets (as well as any others you have left over) on eBay and probably recoup at least that $44.00, maybe more. I realize you already have the valve cover gaskets and would like to use those, but by buying the gaskets piecemeal you run the risk of not having a gasket which the mechanic ends up needing to complete the job.

Here's a list of the gaskets in Josh's 3.2L set, I've put a * next to the ones I would replace (at a minimum) when doing HG's:

butterfly (on secondary intake runner) to plenum (4)
primary intake runner to plenum (2)
throttle body to plenum
IAB/ISC (2)
*intake runner to head (2)
*spark plug tube (6)
thermostat ring
schrader valve top
schrader valve bottom
pressure regulator top
pressure regulator bottom
snubber top
snubber bottom
*LH valve cover
*RH valve cover
RH thermostat housing
LH thermostat housing
EGR/exhaust manifold (but not EGR/intake – available separately)
intake valve seal (12)
exhaust valve seal (12)
*exhaust manifold (2)
*injector to head (6)
*injector to rail o-ring (6)
*injector to rail gasket (6)
front cam seal (2)
upper cam cover gasket
cam seal (3)
water pump tube o-ring (2)
head gasket 3.2L (2)

I think just having the new spark plug tube seals makes the set worth it (it would be a shame to have the valve covers off and not replace them only to have the plug tubes start filling with oil right off the bat).

Another thing you might have to consider adding would be new head bolts (they are reusable, but you should double-check them before re-installing to make sure they're not stretched), which last I heard ran about $90 for a set.

Huh? All of the gaskets in that list are included in Josh's $143.73 upper gasket set. http://www.shonutperformance.com/Gaskets.htm 7th item on the list. If you're asking how much in extra labor, it shouldn't be that much if any -- the parts removed & reinstalled during a HG job are all accessed during the work.
