Hello guys, I have a coolant leak on my car coming from the drivers side, I thought it was a freeze plug that blew out but on the bottom portion of the head it looks like a plug screws in there? Does anyone first off know what I am talking about and if so can I just put a bolt in the hole? It looks like a fairly course thread if it is a bolt. Car is a 95 ATX. It definately is coming out of the hole not any hoses(took me quite a while to find it because it is in a PITA spot.

Any help would be great, I have the car up in the air right now.

Thanks Eric

Are you close the the thermostat housing? Can you describe the area a bit more accurate to its position? Or better yet get us a picture?

Sorry the forum won't let me post pictures? I will try and better explain it. On the drivers side rear of engine(closest to firewall) On the bottom portion of the rear head there is a piece of aluminum that extrudes out(appears to be a drain for the heads or probably a freeze plug) only problem is if its the freeze plug then it screws in as there are threads on it. It is either a plug missing or a bolt missing just can't seem to find a picture of the area I am talking about on the forum. The engine would really have to be out of the car to even get any sort of picture of it. I had to use a 3' mirror to see it.

Hope this helps.

email me the picture if you want. To post pics on the forum you must host them somewhere then link to them.

Is this the plug you speak of? This is from a MTX head though.

So its this one? If so thats strange. I don't think there should be any coolant comming out of that hole. It looks like a M10X1.25 thread.

Now that I look at that picture I think that there is a possiblity that the antifreeze came from the one that you described first and it just looks like it is draining from the other one. Do you have any idea where I can get a plug like the one shown? Is this a freeze plug or a pressure releif style plug? There is some sort of metal bracket right on top of it. Too bad it is in the tightest spot on this car.

Thanks again,
Eric

That first plug I posted will be just a 1/4 NPT pipe plug. You should be able to find one at any hardware store. It may be a different style but it will still work. Find a brass one if you can. Also it will require Teflon tape on the threads not to leak. The tape must be wrapped in the direction of the thread also.

Found the leak! It's coming from the small portion of rubber host that goes to the heater core right beside the head. It was pumping right into that hole. That hose looks like it may be a real PITA to remove, would anyone have an idea if I can just put a new hose on it and doulble clamp it as the original has a fitting that basically converts it into the metal tube from the rubber. The rubber portion is only 4-5 inches.

thanks again,
Eric
