My CEL light started coming on for no reason it would seem yesterday during an 150 mile trip

I noticed that there was 0 coolant in resevior but it had some in the rad.

the first time the cel light just blinked on. the engine was running fine. I stopped and filled up the coolant resevior with pre-mixed coolant til it was full.

the light was gone then it came on about 30 minutes later.

I stopped turned off the car then turned it back on. then it went away. now it started to come on every 15 or so minutes. all I had to do is turn the key on-off and it went away.

when I got to my uncles house. I noticed that the coolant in the resevior was all gone.... there was plenty it would seem in the RAD though.

He took it for a nice hard spin. and the CEL light didn't come back on.

he did notice that the cap for the Resevior wasn't done up.

I jumpered my EEC this afternoon and pulled codes.

the stored code was 91 --system running lean? why?

then I pulled

21 Engine coolant Temp ECT Sensor OUt Of range?

73 TPS??

25 Knock sensor... it's not pinging ..

thanks guys.

this was my second drive with her and first CEL/ Code pull.

74

engine cylinder checked out 9 for all good.

then I checked the dip stick and it didn't look milky.

this engine runs great.

any Ideas?

I noticed also that if I stick my finger in the back exhaust pipe it gets soaked and is very wet with water... could be my headgasket??? but car runs great and stong and doesn't blow smoke out the back...

Water vapor is just fine in the exhaust.. unless its spitting out the tail.. then maybe something is wrong.

Can't say for sure.. but the ECT code usually comes up if the car is still "cold" dosen't it? Was the car wamred up all the way when you ran the test.

And... the first thing I would look at is your TPS sensor. If you have an electrical tester / meter, you can test the output of that sensor, and see if maybe there is a dead spot in it. (You'll have to have the key ON, then watch the voltage and see if it flashes 0.0, when you move the throttle plate) Sometimes they get "dead spots" in them. I can see that causing a lean / knock issue intermittentally.

Search for TPS test or something along those lines.

There is ALWAYS a reason. Just because you don't know yet what it is doesn't mean it does not exist.

You probably have an O2 sensor that is getting lazy. The rest of the codes are likely due to testing error.

The carbon and water are normal for an exhaust. What are the byproducts of combustion? H2O among other things. If the exhaust was not hot enough to evaporate the water, you'll see it. Every engine does the same thing to varying degrees.

Keep an eye on the coolant level for awhile. You probably have a radiator leaking.
