Sounds like your timing belt just shit the bed. Either the belt broke, or it skipped a LARGE number of teeth due to it having stretched or the tensioner having broken.

Fortunately, the engine is non-interference, so all you need to do is replace the timing belt and/or tensioner and you're good to go once more.

So how do I get it back in time? I checked the belt and everything, that was the first thing I checked, it's still tight and didn't see any ribs missing it was last replaced about 20,000 miles ago when the engine was rebuilt. Thanks for the fast comments!

Backfiring is usually a timing issue. The belt could be fine and still jump time if the tensioner fails during operation. I've seen motors pop and such with clogged cats. I wonder how much exhaust is making it out? The best way to get the belt lined up properly is to remove it and reset the timings marks to reinstall.

Ok I'm goin to try and pull the belt and reset the cams, crank back to the mark then reinstall. I'm pretty sure exhuast is making it out a HUGE cloud of black smoke shot out when it died and also spits a little black out when it trys to crank then it'll fire for jus a sec run like **** then blow a huge cloud and die????

My money is on skipped timing belt as well, get in there and reset it .

Ok that what I'm goin to check first, I'll do that tomarow and let y'all know if it worked. Crank at 5 o'clock and cams at 12 o'clock right? Or do I have that backwards?

Yes about that, there are marks on the back timing cover and the notch on the oil pump show where to line up the dots. Make sure your crank is not 180 degrees out, I have done that before.

I think it was the cats. I had the battry un hooked all night hooked it back up today fired right up at still black smokes a little. And now it is really loud it's coming from about where the cats are and one tip is coming out hot and the other is blowing cool air can the mufflers resonators what ever ther called be clogged? The one that is blowing hot has a hole like somthing expolded in it! Thanks, chris

If the catalyst broke up it can sometimes come out and clog stuff up. The only way to know anything for sure is to take it apart and investigate. That's true with cats or timing belt or most anything. You have to be methodical and eliminate things.
