ok, made a big mistake tonight. just after finally getting the sho back on the road after like a week. we went out for a "test drive" eventually my buddy convinces me to let him drive. i figure sure, hes a good driver, and also owns a manual car so he'll be ok. but nooo!!! he was running through the gears, goes into 3rd, takes it up to about 85ish, goes to shift into 4th, but instead manages to throwit into 2nd!!! luckilly he quickly realized but he did let the clutch out already. engine screams, not sure how far but i think i saw it only go to 7500, but i think it went higher really. luckily he instantly clutched and pulled over. it didnt seem to do any damage though. ran perfectly fine still. so I drive back home. but at redlights we noticed it was idling kinda rough, not very bad, but def noticable. you could feel the whole car slighty shaking from the engine, mainly while idling. but the had no problems driving still. after we got home i poped the hood w/ the engine still running. now i heard a new noice which went with the rough idling and vibrations it caused. i located the sound best i could, it was coming somewhere from underneath the throttle body. no clue whats up, seems to drive perfectly fine still, although of course i didnt push it hard after that. our best guess is perhaps a piston ring on the right side of the engine? plz, any advise is greatly appreciated as this is my daily driver and needs fixing asap. is it safe to drive it like a granny in the meantime?

What you have probably done is bent or even broke one of the pressure plate straps. This will warrant a new clutch very soon. When I sheered off one of my straps, the car shook like an unbalanced load of laundry in a cheap washing machine. It was also harder to get into gear. To check this, remove the starter and examine the 3 straps on the clutch assembly. Use the crank bolt to turn the motor over to check.

How in god's name were you able to go from 3rd to 2nd at 85 mph anyway? My MTX has to be below 65 for me to even try to shift into 2nd. Even then, i would have to stand on the shifter to do so.

yes, thats has to be what it is. dunno how i didnt realized what it was last night. but today i definately noticed the horrendous shifting. the clutch is not completely disengaging. although very dificult to drive, it is still drivable if need be. will it get worse or stay as it is. is it ok to drive or will it damge my trans? and is it possible to get just a new pressure plate, or is an entire kit in order? thanks

Well if you clutch is reasonably new, i would say just to get a new pressure plate and TOB. Driving it with a bad clutch will cause hard shifts... and with hard shifts comes grinding gears. With that comes bunged up syncros and rounded off gears if it is driven too much.

If one of the straps did break, it is possible for the remnants to pivot outward and start cutting the inside of the bell housing. After too much damage the fix is a new tranny.

I can shift into any gear except for 1st and reverse at any speed.

The first weekend I had my SHO I did just what he did, went looking for 4th and found second. Luckely, I wasnt going so fast (75 MPH IIRC) and my reflexes were fast enough to avoid any driveline problems. No matter though, it was a failing clutch already

Pull the starter and check the pressure plate straps NOW!!! If one of them is broken, and you continue to drive it, you WILL junk your tranny!!!
