Discussed in past posts ad nauseum, but answer not really nailed. "as high as the jack will go is the usual response"..but.... I'd like to get this right on before dropping the sub-frame; but no higher than necessary so stuff is easier to reach. Shonut video says height must be 20" to clear transmission, but omits a critical detail; where this is measured. Does anyone have a measurement that will ensure the needed clearance?

are you talking about how far to lower the subframe to allow to get to the clutch?

Anywhere from the wheel well to the front of the car that is 20" up should be enough. I jack the car as far as the jack will go and support the car. Sinks down a few inches and it's still plenty to get the tranny out. Since it's right near the wheel well when the tranny comes out I usually just slide it out that way.

Plus don't worry about it being low "so stuff is easier to reach". There's going to be no difference between getting things out whether you have it up all the way or just enough to slide it out. In fact you're going to want the car up as high as possible if you have the rod shifter. It's much easier to get out when the car is higher up.

A 14" jackstand located right behind the subframe is high enough

Theres plenty of room once the subframe is out.

Yeah..the rod shifter requires more height for removal than the tranny...once the SF is out.

Aside from the brake rotors hanging down, I would assume 20" would be measured form the lowest part of the car somewhere near the front of the subframe.

Since I've done it a few times.... I would also give you a repsonse noting to go as high as you can with your jack.

My brother and I pull the tranny out the drivers side wheel well. You will need two jacks and two jack stands. Loosen the passenger side subframe bolts while using a jack to support the engine. You pull the wheel, hub, brakes etc from the drivers side. Disconnect the battery cables to the starter selenoid. Remove the subframe bolts on the driver side and lower the engine and transmission. If you have an EGR watch for the brake fluid bowl. Unbolt the tranny and remove from the wheel well. It is more difficult to put the tranny back in than to take it out. I may have missed a step or two, but I worked for us. If you are just changing the clutch you can move the tranny out of the way instead of pulling it out completely.

Thanks for that. I'm using a 14" jackstand with a 2x4 on top of it supporting the frame rails. The distance from frame rail to garage floor is 17". I parked the rear tires on doubled up 2x10's so the car would be at a little flatter angle. I had no problem getting the shifter out. I'm hope this is high enough, but I'm not sure.
